Speaker: Professor Stephen Orgel, Stanford University, California
In 1973, Stephen Orgel and Roy Strong published their landmark two-volume study, Inigo Jones. Jones (1573-1652) was one of Britain's earliest and most learned architects, the creator of some of Stuart England's most striking buildings and the designer of some of its most memorable dramatic spectacles-working to great effect with the playwright Ben Jonson on the marriage of text and spectacle known as the 'masque'. In this illustrated lecture, Professor Orgel revisits his early work on Jones and takes a closer look at the relationship between the architecture of Jones's fantasy and his actual designs, considering the surprising examples where Jones drew on real buildings in his imaginary stage designs.
