Speaker: Simon Armitage

Writers at York

As part of the Writers at York series, organised by the Department of English and Related Literature, Simon Armitage will be reading from his new book Gig: The Life and Times of a Rock Star Fantacist.

"Poetry gets under the radar. It operates by stealth."

"I used to get a bit chippy if I was referred to as a 'northern writer'. These days I feel flattered by it."

Thanks to a mischievous and anonymous contribution to Armitage's Wikipedia entry, many people now believe that Armitage once held the post of trainee funeral director. "If only," the poet is said to have murmured in response.
