Jazz and Improvised Music

This is a growing area of research in the department. We have always supported jazz performance, and our University Jazz Orchestra performs both standard and new repertoire, often with visiting guest soloists. The resident ensemble The Julian Argüelles Octet gives concerts and coaches jazz performers. Two members of staff (John Taylor and Jonathan Eato), both experienced composers and performers, welcome research students through either the MPhil/PhD in Performance or the MPhil/PhD in Composition. The growing collection of rare sound recordings (University of York Sound Archives) also supports historical research in Jazz.

Dr Jonathan Eato

Dr Jonathan Eato

Jonathan Eato has a particular interest in improvised music, interdisciplinary performance, music for dance, and idiosyncractic uses of technology. Although he has written orchestral pieces and song cycles for western art music performers etc., he is increasingly concerned with non-standard performance practices and with musical material that escapes notation. He regularly collaborates with composer Craig Vear in the duo ev2.
