Ethnomusicology

York is the home of Gamelan Sekar Petak directed by Dr Neil Sorrell. York has instruments, recordings and library holdings to support research in Indonesian, Thai and Indian music. Research in these areas is both practice based and scholarly, and research students also take full advantage of the music research centre, research seminars, and composers seminars.

Neil Sorrell's current research includes a book on the history of singing, co-authored with Dr John Potter, and three seminars in autumn 2008 (Amsterdam, London and York) based primarily on the archive he acquired from Patrick Foulds concerning his parents, the composer John Foulds and the musician, social reformer and mystic Maud MacCarthy.
