The vocal trio 'Juice' - music department ensemble in residence - has won an Independent Music Award for their CD 'Songspin'. They won the judges' award for Best Contemporary Classical Album, judged by the likes of Keith Richards, Tom Waits and Tori Amos, plus a wealth of music industry professionals across many genres.

The York Spring Festival of New Music begins on Wednesday 9 May. Headlined by a wide variety of local, UK and international artists across five days, events will be held in venues ranging from the University of York’s concert halls to more informal surroundings within the city walls, featuring styles of music spanning jazz, classical, contemporary, vocal and musical comedy.

Dr Thomas Simaku is one of three nominees for the ‘instrumental solo or duo’ category for his work ‘Soliloquy IV’ for bass clarinet. New lecturer Martin Suckling has received nominations in both the chamber music category for his piece 'To See the Dark Between' and the vocal category for 'What Shall I Give?'

A new NMC release includes works by Roger Marsh and Nicola LeFanu. Crossing Ohashi Bridge is a CD by the Goldberg Ensemble, with Marsh’s ‘Canto 1’ for 11 strings and LeFanu’s ‘Amores’ for horn and string ensemble.

Dream Hunter, a new opera by Emeritus Professor Nicola LeFanu with a libretto by the poet John Fuller, will receive its world premiere on 25 October 2011 at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Wales.

Thomas Simaku’s work Locked Door will receive its European Premiere in Switzerland on 11 September 2011. Entitled New Songs from Europe, the concert will be given by Christine Simolka (soprano) and René Wohlhauser (piano) at the Musiksaal QuBa in Basel; the programme includes works by, among others, Luigi Nono and Geörgy Kurtág.

York graduates Nish As Rish made a winning debut at this year’s Festival Interceltique de Lorient. The group won the prestigious ‘Trophée Loïc Raison’ for the best new folk group. At the semi-finals, judges reported that this year’s competition was the fiercest for 20 years.

The New York Mystery Plays premiered to a full house at the National Centre for Early Music in a spectacular concert set within the Festival of Ideas. Created entirely by students of the Department of Music, University of York under the direction of Ambrose Field, the New York Mystery Plays are a new contemporary response to York’s medieval Mystery play cycle.

Tony Myatt and Oliver Larkin held a two day workshop about spatial sound composition at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Vienna on the 3rd and 4th March. The workshop was attended by artists who have been commissioned to create new works for the forthcoming exhibition of The Morning Line, which opens in Schwarzenbergplatz, Vienna on the 7th June 2011.

Thomas Simaku’s work Soliloquy IV for Bass Clarinet will be performed in Edinburgh on 9 March 2011in a concert given by Sarah Watts (bass clarinet) and Antony Clare (piano). Sarah Watts gave the UK premiere of the work at St. Leonard Church, Shoreditch, in London last September.
