Black Hair, formed in 1995, is an ensemble of musicians specialising in the performance of new music and music theatre. The name of the group is taken from the Japanese ghost story by the 19th century writer Lafcadio Hearn, upon which Roger Marsh based his song 'Black Hair'.
Black Hair has made special concert and theatre performances around the world, including at the SPOR festival in Aarhus, Denmark and the Sconfini festival in Modena Italy. In 2009 the group has performed at festivals in Leeds and Corsham, and at the Universities of Manchester and Durham. A recent collaboration with the theatre group Open Minds Theatre culminated in a performance at the 2009 Rotherham Open Arts Festival. As Ensemble in Residence at York they provide music theatre and composition workshops, and will appear in the 2010 Spring Festival of New Music.
