I grew up in Burley in Wharfedale, and attended secondary school in nearby Ilkley, West Yorkshire. Following school, I took a first degree in Geography at Liverpool University. I commenced work as an Administrative Trainee at my local Health Authority in 1983 and subsequently spent 17 years working my way through a series of administrative and management posts in the NHS in Yorkshire and the North-East. Along the way I completed a distance learning Pg Diploma in Health Management and an MBA at Durham University. I also did some part time teaching on Health Management programmes. In 2000 I joined the University of York. Since then, my main focus has been teaching, in particular on post experience health management programmes. Recently I have mainly taught undergraduate programmes in International Business, Marketing, Services Management and Strategy.
