Research

Overview

My main research interests are

Workplace financial education. I conducted a pilot study of companies with workplace financial education in conjunction with ifsProshare in 2007, and am currently developing a major survey to establish the extent and character of workplace financial education in large companies.

Employee share ownership plans. Projects have examined majority employee ownership and employee share plans in large companies. Past projects include an ESRC-funded study of UK ESOPs, a study of behaviour in stock option plans, and an examination of financial participation in Europe (funded by the European Foundation). Current projects include analysis of the relationship between share plans and various aspects of employment such as employee monitoring, training, and participation, using the Workplace Employment Relations Survey 2004. I am also investigating the factors influencing employee participation in share ownership plans. Starting in January 2009 an ESRC CASE studentship will examine employee engagement in employee-owned companies in conjunction with the Employee Ownership Association. To see evidence submitted to the Postal Services Bill Committee on employee ownership in Royal Mail privatization click here.

Finance, ownership, governance, and human resource management. This research has sought to evaluate the effect of finance, ownership, and governance on employment and human resource management. Projects have included studies funded by the Department of Trade and Industry, European Science Foundation, and the International Labour Office. Current projects include a study of the relationship between ownership and employee remuneration using WERS2004. For a recent project on The Impact of Investment Funds on Restructuring Practices and Employment Levels click here.

Impact of public ownership and privatisation on industrial relations. My PhD investigated managerial strategy and industrial relations in British Rail in the 1970s and 1980s. I subsequently studied the nature of workplace representation amongst train drivers, funded by the Nuffield Foundation. An ESRC-funded project examined the impact of privatisation on railway employment relations, and assessed whether post-privatisation managers differed from their predecessors.
