Directories of physics resources

  • BUBL LINK: Physics
  • INTUTE: Science, Engineering and Technology NOTE: this site is closing in July 2011. After this time, the website will still be available but will not be maintained or updated.
  • IoP Select -a special collection of journal articles, expertly chosen based on Substantial advances or significant breakthroughs, a high degree of novelty, or s significant impact on future research. Updated weekly, requires free registration or IoP membership.
  • Net Advance of Physics - includes Physicist's Encyclopædia, review articles, special reports and annotated bibliographies.
  • Phibot.Org - a full text search engine over a collection of more than 150.000.000 million web pages worldwide. Phibot identifies physics-related pages out of this collection and as of March 2002 5 million+ physics-related web documents are accessible. In addition to the webindex, Phibot provides a powerful news search engine. Search worldwide news, science news and computer/internet news from the last two weeks until now or just display the latest news from those channels.
  • PhysicsWeb - directory and many other useful resources. An excellent starting point. (formally part of the TIPTOP: Internet Pilot to Physics)
  • SPIN database (which contains abstracts from AIP and AIP Member Society Journals), discussion forums, collections of recommended internet resources and much more.
  • TechXtra - a free service that allows you to find articles, books, websites, latest industry news, research, thesis and dissertations in Electronics, Engineering, Maths and Computing.
  • WWW Virtual Library: Physics

Teaching and learning

  • LTSN Physical Sciences centre - aims to promote high standards in the learning and teaching of physics, astronomy and chemistry by identifying and supporting innovation, exchange of ideas and dissemination of good practice, leading to an enhancement of the learning experience for students.
  • PhysicsEd: Physics Education Resources - The goal of this page is to create a complete reference source for Physics Education on the WWW. Lesson plans, labs, pointers to software, articles, homework problems, test questions, and whatever else members of the community wish to contribute.

General physics services

  • American Physical Society Librarians/Institutional Information - information on subscriptions costs, copyright permissions & licensing, and links to APS published journals.
  • PhysicsWeb - The first phase of PhysicsWeb will offer a total of ten on-line services. PhysicsWeb will also include enhanced versions of articles from Physics World magazine. PhysicsWeb will be free to registered users until 6 April 1998. After this date extra services will be introduced and access to certain services will be restricted to Physics World subscribers, PhysicsWeb subscribers and members of the Institute of Physics.

Astronomy/Astrophysics

  • China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology - China's national space organisation.
  • ESA - European Space Agency site.
  • Heavens Above - provides the information needed to observe satellites such as the International Space Station, Envisat, and the Space Shuttle, spectacular events such as the dazzlingly bright flares from Iridium satellites as well as a wealth of other space flight and astronomical information. Also includes deep space missions and current locations. Users have to register (free) on the site to use.
  • NASA
  • Mars Digital Atlas - produced by NASA's Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) at a 256 pixel/degree (about 230 meters/pixel) resolution.
  • OMNIWeb: National Space Science Data Center WWW service - A WWW-based data retrieval and analysis interface to NSSDC's OMNI data which consist of 1-hour-resolution "near-Earth" solar wind magnetic field and plasma data, energetic proton fluxes (1-60 MeV), and geomagnetic and solar activity indices. It allows the user to select a subset from the available OMNI data and produce a listing. It also provides a graphical browsing capability to analyze and preview the data as a XY-Plot.
  • Royal Observatory, Edinburgh
  • SolStation.com - provides information and software for those interested in astronomy and in writing, education, or entertainments related to science or speculative fiction. Includes detailed information on nearest 50 stars to Sol.
  • Space.com - daily news service devoted to space exploration and commercial exploitation.
  • VizieR: the CDS/ESRIN service for astronomical catalogues - a tool for retrieving astronomical data listed in published catalogues and tables. The CDS collects and distributes astronomical data catalogues, generally related to observations of stars and galaxies.
  • WebStars: astrophysics in cyberspace
