The library has a number of general guides available on the webpages and the VLE, together with a series of online tutorials covering such subjects as using YorSearch, accessing journals, and searching the Internet effectively.

Philosophy Resources
Resources in the library
Books on Philosophy are shelved on the second floor of the library in the A section. There are also relevant books in other sections (see subject arrangement below). There are some general reference works on Philosophy in the Reference section located on the first floor of the library. Printed journals are shelved in North Rooms 1 and 2. Use YorSearch to find out which books and journals the library holds, and where they are shelved.
The following is a summary of the main subject divisions relevant to Philosophy as arranged in the Library. It is not a comprehensive list of all subjects covered and you may find that other relevant materials are shelved in different sections of the library (e.g. law or medicine).

- Electronic Journals at York provides links to an alphabetical list of full text electronic journals available at York, subject lists of full text and other electronic journals, publishers' collections of electronic journals, online newspapers and news services, and directories of electronic journals.
- If you do not know which specific journal to search, but instead have a topic for which you need to find scholarly articles, you will need to use one of the library databases available via MetaLib (see the next section for information on specific titles).
- Google Scholar is another useful resource for finding scholarly journal articles on philosophical topics. Once you are in Google Scholar, go to Scholar Preferences and select the University of York from the list of libraries to ensure that you have quick access to journal resources here.

- MetaLib (York users only)
A gateway to bibliographic databases, statistical datasets, electronic journals and other Web resources available to members of the University. Includes guides and links to help. Also allows cross-searching of resources, and Alerts. Login with your University username and password to access all of these features.
There is a specific section on MetaLib for Philosophy which includes a range of databases relevant to the subject. Please note, however that there may also be databases in other subject areas (such as law or medicine) worth exploring. - JSTOR
A digital archive collection of core scholarly journals starting with the first issues (many of which date from the 1800s) and including a number of key titles for philosophy. Available via MetaLib.
- Oxford Bibliographies Online: Philosophy (NEW Oct 2011)
- Oxford Reference Online
Includes reference works and dictionaries for philosophy. Available via MetaLib.
- Oxford Scholarship Online: Philosophy
Online books covering all areas of contemporary philosophy and the history of philosophy, published by Oxford University Press. Available via MetaLib.
- Past Masters text databases
Collection of electronic texts in philosophy, covering the history of political thought and theory, education, religious studies, economics, classics, history and philosophy of science, Germanic studies and sociology. Available via MetaLib.
- Philosopher's Index via EBSCO
The main bibliographic database for philosophy, indexing books, book chapters and journals, giving bibliographical references and abstracts. EBSCO is the new host for this database, starting October 2010. Available via MetaLib.
- PhilPapers
A directory of online philosophy articles and books by academic publishers. It monitors almost 300 philosophy journals as well as online archives and personal websites, and takes submissions from users. Available via MetaLib.
- Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy
This online version of the 10 volume print edition has over 2,000 articles covering all areas of philosophy. It is regularly revised and updated and more than 100 new articles have been added in the last eight years. Available via MetaLib.
- Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
A dynamic (continually updated) reference work with an archive of fixed editions. Still under development. Available via MetaLib.

- Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy: a peer-reviewed academic resource.
- Intute: Philosophy: provides free access to high quality resources on the Internet. Each resource has been evaluated and categorised by subject specialists based at UK universities. Note that funding for this service has been withdrawn (summer 2010) and no new resources will be added; however the existing links will remain for the immediate future and may be helpful.
- Intute: Religion and Theology: provides free access to high quality resources on the Internet. Each resource has been evaluated and categorised by subject specialists based at UK universities.
