  • Hemscott Company Guru database - allows you to research information including:- financial data for the UK's top 300,000 companies; detailed data on all directors of UK listed companies; live regulatory and AFX news feeds; share prices, trades and charts. Please note that this database will not be available after August 2008.
  • MetaLib (York users only)
    A gateway to bibliographic databases, statistical datasets, electronic journals and other Web resources available to members of the University. Includes guides and links to help. Also allows cross-searching of resources, and Alerts. Login with your University username and password to access all of these features.

Directories of business resources

  • BBC Learning Business - part of the BBC's commercial Worldwide Learning catalogue. Provides links to various business and management teaching resources.
  • Biz/ed - "a dedicated business and economics information gateway for students, teachers and lecturers. Biz/ed draws on a wide range of expertise to not only point to quality educational sites but to host primary materials, most notably case studies, work sheets and substantial datasets not found elsewhere on the Internet". A UK-based, nationally-funded service incorporating company facts, national and international economic and financial data, a searchable catalogue of internet resources and links to other related services.
  • BUBL LINK: Management - classified, searchable list of internet resources with brief descriptions. A nationally-funded service for the UK H.E. community, maintained by staff of Strathclyde University.
  • GATT Digital Library 1947-1994 - This site provides free access to over 30,000 full text documents and reports published by and about the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), an international organisation that promoted international commerce and the reduction of trade barriers among member states from 1947- 1994. The public documents include reports, studies, and meeting records covering a broad range of topics related to international trade in the post-war period.
  • Higher Education Academy: Business, Management and Accountancy resources - includes quality, university-level Internet resources on accounting and finance, business and management, marketing, and related topics.
  • Intute: Business and Management - an extensive nationally-funded gateway to free Internet resources on business and management, which can be browsed by subject or searched by keyword. Browsing can be restricted to UK or European resources. Sites are described in detail.

Academic sites

  • International Research Journal of Finance and Economics
  • Research Guide on the Trading Systems in the Asian-Pacific Region: APEC, ASEAN and their Members - written by the Foreign and International Librarian at the O'Quinn Law Library at the University of Houston Law Center. The guide was published in 2005 on the Globalex Website and made freely available by the Hauser Global Law School at the New York University School of Law. The author provides an overview of Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the Associations of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) including links to online resources relating to the organisations and a bibliography of books and articles. Links to key Websites and bibliographies on trade and investment in individual member states are also provided.
  • Sociology of Work and Organization - This site is produced by the Sociology Institute at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. The articles cover a wide range of aspects of the study of work and organisations and are in both German and English.

UK national agencies and Government depts

  • Bank of England - detailed information about the Bank's operations and publications, plus the texts of recent press releases.
  • Department of Trade and Industry - ministers' profiles, texts of recent speeches and publications, plus guidance and information for the business community and the general public.
  • Educators Corner - A free collection of entrepreneurship education resources.
  • H.M. Treasury - texts of the Chancellor's recent speeches and statements, White/Green Papers, press releases and other official documents and reports, from "the department responsible for formulating and putting into effect the UK Government's financial and economic policy".

International agencies

  • Big Charts - Data and charts covering the US and some other major markets around the world. To view the list of countries, click on the Global link in the top left hand area of the screen, close to the keyword search box. There is a useful range of charting options.
    Historical prices are available as charts (use the Java Chart option) and as individual data items for specific dates.
  • European Central Bank - background information, press releases and publications, plus links to the websites of national banks of European countries.
  • European Union - information on the EU, in all EU languages, which includes news, full texts of official documentation, and background on key issues such as the Euro, legislation, employment etc.
  • International Monetary Fund - background information, press releases, plus an archive (1996-, updated daily) of tables of exchange rates in terms of SDRs (Special Drawing Rights). Also includes the Data Dissemination Standards Bulletin Board, which offers an index of countries who provide websites of summary economic data, or if no website is available, information about their printed data sources.
  • Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development - "The OECD groups 29 member countries in an organisation that provides governments a setting in which to discuss, develop and perfect economic and social policy". Site offers background information (including the full text of the latest annual report), details of publications and statistics, plus some documents which are free to download.
    NB: Members of the University of York can access OECD statistical series via YorkDataNet, from any PC on the campus network.
  • World Bank - "the World Bank offers loans, advice, and an array of customized resources to more than 100 developing countries and countries in transition". Site includes background information on publications and projects, regional and national profiles, and summary data.

Societies and other organisations

  • Adam Smith Institute - "founded in 1977 as a private and independent economic policy institute. Over the years it has extended its capability to promote market-based economic reform ideas internationally... In the UK, the Adam Smith Institute has played a crucial role in the development of policy including privatization, regulatory reform and government restructuring". Developing site includes information about publications, conferences and links to other organisations.
  • American Economic Association - their mission "the encouragement of economic research, especially the historical and statistical study of the actual conditions of industrial life". Site includes information about membership, meetings and publications (e.g. Journal of Economic Literature).
  • Association for Social Economics - US society formed in 1941 "to advance scholarly research and writing about the great questions of economics, human dignity, ethics, and philosophy. Members seek to explore the ethical foundations and implications of economic analysis, along with the individual and social dimensions of economic problems, and to help shape economic policy that is consistent with the integral values of the person and a humane community". Site includes information about membership, meetings and publications.
  • Chartered Management Institute - The UK's leading professional body for managers, whose mission is to promote the art and science of management.
  • Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development - The CIPD is the professional body for those involved in the management and development of people.
  • European Private Equity and Venture Capital Association - This source provides an overview as well as supplying plausible reasons that the industry serves a purpose for the greater good, even while its leaders are making personal fortunes. EVCA gives industry performance information and, once a year, company performance rankings.
  • Country Insights - from the Canadian Centre for Intercultural Learning, this site contains information on all aspects of business culture for countries around the world.
  • Institute for Fiscal Studies - "The Institute for Fiscal Studies is a politically independent registered charity, one of Europe's pre-eminent centres of policy research. IFS aims to bridge the gap between policy-makers and academics: to bring academic rigour to policy discussion, and policy relevance to academic research". Site includes details of IFS research and publications, membership information and a guide to job opportunities.
  • Institute of Economic Affairs - UK "think-tank" whose mission is "to improve understanding of the fundamental institutions of a free society with particular reference to the role of markets in solving economic and social problems". Site includes background information on all areas with which the IEA is involved e.g. environment, health, development, plus a section especially for students.
  • National Bureau of Economic Research (USA) - "Founded in 1920, the National Bureau of Economic Research is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan research organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of how the economy works". Site includes detailed information on publications and research projects, a range of online data series (currently no restrictions on access), plus links to other relevant sites.
    Members of the University of York can download NBER Working Papers without restriction from this site (printed issues 1998- held in G Periodicals, North Room, JB Morrell Library). To search by keyword for relevant papers from this series and others, use the WoPEc service (listed under Databases above).
  • National Institute of Economic and Social Research - "Britain's longest established independent economic research institute with over sixty years experience of applying academic excellence to the needs of business and policy makers. The Institute is independent of all party political interests. It has no core funding from government and is not affiliated to any single university, although our staff regularly undertake projects in collaboration with leading academic institutions". Site includes full texts of Discussion Papers which can be downloaded without restriction, plus information about research programmes and other publications.
  • OFFSTATS: Official Statistics on the Web - one of the best starting points for statistical sources by country, topic or subject.
    In the country lists, these are mainly sites provided by statistical offices, central banks and government departments and agencies. The topics list is comprised of links to the statistics pages of international organizations and associations, and a few commercial sites.
  • Royal Economic Society - "one of the oldest economic associations in the world. It is a professional association which promotes the encouragement of the study of economic science in academic life, government service, banking, industry and public affairs". Site includes information about membership, conferences and publications (e.g. Economic Journal, Econometrics Journal), plus an archive of recent media briefings and the UK-JOE job opportunities directory.
  • US Census Bureau - quick access to US macroeconomic data
  • Wolff Worldwide - is a global network that specialises in providing reports from two or three credit reporting companies per country with access to more than 50 million companies in 238 countries.

Management and business

  • 12manage - 12manage is a management portal that summarizes over 300 management methods, models and organizational theories, applying scientific rigor while ensuring practical relevance.
  • Accounting, Business Studies and Economics Dictionary - A useful specialist subject dictionary for students.
  • AccountingWeb - "the everyday resource for accountants on the Internet", including news and features, links to other internet resources, and a searchable Company Information Zone providing access to statutory and financial information on over 1.4 million UK companies. Some features require registration (no charge).
  • Alacrawiki Spotlights - a guide to business information companies, publishers and databases. The Alacra Industry Spotlights in particular are extremely useful in providing reviews and commentary on industry specific web sites that have statistics, market research and news.
  • Bureau van Dijk - A collection of company databases covering a wide range of countries. Priced service but free trials available. The Free Directory is a good way of identifying the location of a company and its subsidiaries, and for drawing up lists of companies by sector, size and country.
  • Business Podcast Directory - Business Podcast Directory organized by subject.
  • Business Sources on the Internet - This lists business resources by type (e.g. Financials, statistics, news).
  • Family Business Research Initiative - This resource brings together findings from evolutionary biology, anthropology, family psychology, economics and organisational behaviour.
    Areas for research include structure, personality and culture in families.
  • Financial Services Authority - information about the FSA's responsibilities and activities: "the regulation of investment business in the UK, the supervision of banks in the UK and listed money market institutions". Also links to related organisations.
  • FINWeb - directory of internet resources for financial economics, compiled by Dr James Garven, Louisiana State University. Not searchable, but sites are described and classified.
  • Forecasting Principles - This extensive website "seeks to develop a set of principles to guide forecasting for problems in management, operations research, and the social sciences". It encompasses "guidelines, prescriptions, rules, conditions, action statements, or advice about what to do in given situations". It includes a 'Methodology Tree ' - a useful starting point if you are not familiar with all forecasting methods, as it describes methods and shows you how they are related to one another; a 'Selection Tree' - to help you identify the most effective forecasting method for a given problem; a 'Forecasting Audit' - which allows you to identify weak areas of your forecasting system; and a 'Forecasting Dictionary' - which defines key forecasting words and phrases.
  • Human Resource Management - Set up in October 2001 this JISCmail mailing list aims to promote exchange of academic and professional information on human resource management related topics. The site contains an archive of all messages submitted to the list (retained for 2 years) which users can interrogate using the free text or keyword search facility.
  • Human Resource Management - An annotated list of links to human resource management information available on the Internet. The list is split into sub-categories, e.g., Groups and Associations, Organisation and Management Theory, Business Psychology, etc., and provides a short description of the content of each site. The guide is hosted by Nottingham Business School.
  • Market Research Portal - A useful starting point for anyone wanting to understand market research jargon and methods. This site gives free access to various industry information including research findings, and to articles written by industry professionals on topics such as market research in general, qualitative research, quantitative research, survey methods and statistics. In addition there is career and job related information, book lists and up-to- date news.
  • Money Extra - a personal finance website for the UK. Provides a regularly updated service of personal finance news, features, stock market information, etc. As well as a financial news service, share dealing and a free portfolio management tool, Money Extra lets you compare a variety of financial products, aiming to cover more than 90% of the market in these product areas.
  • Trade Association Forum - the TAF directory enables you to search for trade associations, guilds or federations by industry or organisation name.
  • UK Business Barometer - This is an online survey, designed for SMEs and based at Nottingham University. It enables small businesses to have a direct and immediate voice. Decision-makers can consider current issues, and know how they are affecting small businesses as they happen, rather than waiting weeks or even months, by which time it may be too late to react.

Finance and accounting

  • FDI.net - This website from the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency provides on-demand country analysis and information on all things related to foreign direct investment in 175 countries.
  • Finance Site List - A long list of finance-related sites, such as finance journals, papers, investments and assets pricing.
  • FITA - Links to sources of information on trade, export/import, business and companies worldwide.
  • International Financial Services, London - Provides analysis and statistics on UK financial services. Free reports on sectors such as private equity, commodities trading and securitisation.
  • Market Research World portal - access to various industry information including articles written by industry professionals (including market research in general, qualitative research, quantitative research, survey methods, statistics and various others), career and job related information, book lists, up-to-date news, etc.
  • Official Company Registers for information on SMEs (Small & Medium-sized Enterprises). Three lists for locating registers on the web:
  • UK Business Park - includes information on ranking of top companies, latest company results, addresses of trade associations, embassies, etc.
  • Yahoo Finance - An excellent source of information on stock markets and share prices for the major markets around the world. For many of them there is 5-6 years of historical share price data available as graphs and in tabular form.
  • Yahoo Finance search tool - A great free tool for quick company research. It searches the Yahoo Finance company descriptions for search terms, and returns lists, news, financial summaries, and a host of other useful information.
