This page provides additional information for Health Sciences students on placement or working at a distance from the University:
You may be able to continue to use the JB Morrell Library during placements. Use the YorSearch Catalogue from home or work to check if the Library has the item you need. Remember that can request books that are on loan to other users.
Use My Library Account to renew your books if no one else has requested them. You will need your University IT Services username and password to both request and renew books.
You will need to check your email regularly for messages from the Library about books that you have requested or that you need to return. If you have any difficulty in returning or collecting an item, please telephone +44 (0)1904 32 3873.
If you have a problem returning your JB Morrell books, the hospital libraries at Harrogate, Northallerton and Scarborough provide a returns service:
York students should note that JB Morrell Library books can be returned at the King's Manor Library, located in Exhibition Square in the city centre.
You can also request items not available in the Library by using the online Interlending option on the Library Catalogue. See Interlending and Document Supply (ILDS) for more information on this service. Please note that books obtained via ILDS will need to be collected from the Library; journal articles can be supplied to your home address.
The majority of the University Library's 40,000 electronic journals can be used from home or work computers. You can link to the University's electronic journals by using the YorSearch Catalogue or Find e-Journal. You will need your University IT Services username and password to access electronic journals.
A workbook on using electronic journals is also available.
The Library's collection of databases such as CINAHL, Medline, PsycINFO and the British Nursing Index can also be used from home PCs in the same way that they can be used on-campus, ie via the MetaLib Gateway. Most databases require you to use your IT Services username and password.
More information on using electronic resources can be found in the Electronic Library section of the Library's webpages. A number of workbooks on using CINAHL, Medline, PsycINFO, and The Cochrane Library are available.
Health Sciences students on placement and NHS staff can use NHS hospital library facilities.
The local hospital libraries listed below provide collections of relevant printed books and journals.
Students may borrow books, make photocopies, use study space, and make enquiries. Each of the local hospital sites also provides access to Department of Health Sciences PCs which connect to the University IT Services network.
Students on placement with Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust can access the specialist mental health library at Cross Lane Hospital in Scarborough.
Students working outside the local area should investigate the NHS facilities available to them.
The NHS also provides access to electronic resources for its staff and for students on placement via NHS Evidence. Some resources require an NHS Athens username and password. You can register for a NHS Athens from the Journals and Databases page within NHS Evidence. Contact your local hospital librarian for more information on using NHS electronic resources.
The SCONUL Access Scheme makes provision for placement and other students to access other university libraries. Some public libraries may also provide useful facilities.
