Databases and datasets

  • MetaLib (York users only)
    A gateway to bibliographic databases, statistical datasets, electronic journals and other Web resources available to members of the University. Includes guides and links to help. Also allows cross-searching of resources, and Alerts. Login with your University username and password to access all of these features.
  • Community of Science - The Community of Science is designed to help you identify and locate researchers with interests and expertise similar to your own. It contains an on-line inventory of researchers, inventions, and facilities at leading U.S. and Canadian universities, and other R & D organizations. The Community of Science contains over 40,000 first-person expertise records, 5,000 inventions records, and 2,000 facilities records.
  • ISIHighlyCited.com - includes publication records and achievements in 21 broad categories; life sciences, medicine, physical sciences, engineering and social sciences. Will continue to be updated weekly, making ISIHighlyCited.com an expanding resource. Currently browsable by subject field.
  • FIZ Karlsruhe - Operates the host STN International, offering public access to over 190 databases with scientific, technical, and supplementary business information. The Library has an account on STN; contact Chris Ellwood for more information.

  • EELS: Engineering Electronic Library, Sweden
  • INFOMINE - intended to introduce the use of Internet/Web resources relevant at a university level. Covers resources including databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, listservs, online library card catalogs, articles and directories of researchers, among many other types of information.
  • M.I.T Theses online - digital library of MIT Theses, a collection of selected MIT master's and doctoral theses which you can read through the World Wide Web.
  • INTUTE: Science, Engineering and Technology - aims to provide high quality Internet resources for students, researchers and practitioners in the physical sciences, specifically in: astronomy, chemistry, earth sciences, physics, and science history and policy.
  • TheScientificWorld - provides tools and resources both to create, acquire, and manage scientific knowledge and to accelerate and enhance scientific work. With free membership scientists can defineareas of interest and set automatic alerts for relevant new articles and scientific events.
  • SCIRUS - developed by Elsevier Science Scirus distinguishes itself from existing search engines by concentrating on scientific content only and by searching both Web and membership sources - currently covers the Web, the ScienceDirect database , BioMedNet, ChemWeb, Neuroscion and Medline.
  • SciSeek - a science and nature directory/search engine resource.
  • University of California, San Diego Science and Engineering Library - interesting, highly graphical site with links to a range of science resources.

Teaching and learning

  • Abbreviations - commonly used abbreviations found in scholarly journals articles and papers, along with their meanings.
  • Association for Science Education - A collection of information for science teaching and study primarily focused on primary and secondary school education. However, the information is reasonably clear and accessible for the general public. Links to a variety of educational science sites worldwide.
  • Babel Fish - on line text/web page translation service provided by AltaVista.
  • Dictionary of units of measurement - provided by the University of North Carolina
  • FreeTranslation - an easy-to-use site for rapid translations where you can get the "gist" of foreign language text and web pages.
  • Learning Technology Support Service - encourages, supports and develops the appropriate use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in learning and teaching throughout the University of Bristol but there is a large amount of information and resources on this site which will be of use to all those involved in teaching at Higher and Further Education levels. The site contains information about: law and good practice on web accessibility; detecting plagiarism; using images; using VLEs; computer assisted assessment and LTSS' system of evaluating your own learning technology knowledge - the Anorak System - which includes focussed feedback to enable skills and knowledge gaps to be filled.
  • PSCI-Com - Public COMmunication of SCIence is a searchable catalogue of internet resources, that have been selected and catalogued by Information Officers at the Wellcome Trust for the benefit of the UK public understanding of science community.
  • RDN Virtual Learning Suite - a set of online tutorials designed to help students, lecturers and researchers improve their Internet information skills. The tutorials offer self-directed learning, take around an hour each to complete, and include quizzes and interactive exercises to lighten the learning experience.
  • Using numeric datasets in teaching and learning - a JISC-funded project to enhance local support of numeric dataset analysis.

Patents and Intellectual Property

  • British Library: Patents, trade marks & designs - answers frequently asked questions, describes BL patents collections, explains services available from the BL and provides links to other patents information services.
  • Bustpatents - legal resources and tools for dealing with information property and genetic patents.
  • Derwent Scientific and Patent Information - Derwent supplies scientific and patent information to companies and research institutes across the world.
  • Delphion - searchable index of world patents. Some aspects require a subscription.
  • European Patent Office
  • Intellectual Property Rights helpdesk - a free information service about patents and all intellectual property throughout Europe.
  • Business and Patent Information Services - based in Leeds (part of their public library services) this unit offers a range of searches and services to anyone who needs to find out detailed patent information.
  • Software Patent Institute - nonprofit corporation formed to provide courses and information about software technology to help improve the patent process.
  • SurpIP - a vertical portal offering access to multiple sources in one search operation. Patent sources include European Patent Office, UK Patent Office, World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), and the USPTO. Technical resources include ACM Digital Library and IEEE website. Business resources include Hoovers Online and the Financial Times.
  • US Patent and trademark office
  • USPTO/CNIDR Patent Project - This page is the starting point for the Patents Project at CNIDR. This page provides access to both the U.S. Patent Bibliographic Database, which includes bibliographic data from 1976 to 11/5/96, and the AIDS Patent Database, which includes the full text and images of AIDS related patent issued by the U.S., European and Japanese Patent offices.
  • World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) - an international organization dedicated to promoting the use and protection of works of the human spirit. These works - intellectual property - are expanding the bounds of science and technology and enriching the world of the arts. Through its work, WIPO plays an important role in enhancing the quality and enjoyment of life, as well as creating real wealth for nations.
