Preprints/working papers, and online reference sources

  • AACE Digital Library - this is a bibliographic database of AACE journals and conference proceedings in the field of computers in education. It is part of the website of the AACE (Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education) which is an international, educational and professional not-for profit organization based in the US. The database is searchable by keyword, author and year.
  • Computer Science Bibliographies - a collection of bibliographies in computer science consisting of about 1100 locally stored bibliographies with altogether about 810,000 references to conference papers.
  • Free On-line Dictionary of Computing - FOLDOC is a searchable dictionary of acronyms, jargon, programming languages, tools, architectures, operating systems, networking, theory, mathematics, telecomms, institutions, companies, projects, products and history
  • Free Trade Publications - a list of trade publication subscriptions available FREE to qualified professionals. You can fill out a subscription form here --online-- and apply for as many trade publications as you wish.
  • Monash University Computer Science technical reports archive sites - an archive of technical reports (abstracts and title lists, not the reports) with links to ftp sites. Suggestions for additions welcome.
  • Networked Computer Science Technical Reports Library - an international collection of computer science technical reports from CS departments and industrial and government research laboratories.
  • Whatis?com - search or browse the encyclopedia for definitions on all terms both computing and technical.

  • MetaLib (York users only)
    A gateway to bibliographic databases, statistical datasets, electronic journals and other Web resources available to members of the University. Includes guides and links to help. Also allows cross-searching of resources, and Alerts. Login with your University username and password to access all of these features.
  • Lecture Notes in Computer Science - on-line version of this series. Contains most volumes from 1997 onwards. Also see the Index to LNCS, which enables you to search the contents pages for all volumes.

  • ArsTechnica - aims to serve up the best multi-OS, PC hardware, and tech coverage possible while remembering what we're all about: having fun, being productive, and being as informative and as accurate as possible.
  • Cyberscience - a collection of internet resources for all issues concerning the use of information and communication technologies in academia. This link collection is part of the Cyberscience project carried out at the Institute of Technology Assessment, Vienna.
  • Corante - an independent service that aims to help you better understand the ideas, issues, factors and trends shaping the fast-paced world of technology and venture financing. E-mail daily delivery possible.
  • General interest computing resources - maintained at the University of York. Includes links to general interest computing resources such as hardware companies, software publishers and archive sites.
  • Kompass - a business information search engine.
  • The Register - computing, electronics, and business news.
  • Research Buzz - Internet research news and information.
  • Scirus -  The most comprehensive scientific research tool on the web. With over 440 million scientific items indexed at last count, it allows researchers to search for not only journal content but also scientists' homepages, courseware, pre-print server material, patents and institutional repository and website information.
  • TechXtra - a free service that allows you to find articles, books, websites, latest industry news, research, thesis and dissertations in Electronics, Engineering, Maths and Computing.

Societies and other organisations

  • All Party Parliamentary Internet Group - exists to provide a discussion forum between new media industries and Parliamentarians for the mutual benefit of both parties. Accordingly, the group considers Internet issues as they affect society informing current UK Parliamentary debate through meetings, informal receptions and reports. The group is open to all Parliamentarians in both the House of Commons and House of Lords.
  • Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) - major force in advancing the skills of information technology professionals and students worldwide.
  • British Computer Society - an industry body for IT professionals, and a Chartered Engineering Institution for Information Technology (IT). With members in over 100 countries around the world, the BCS is the leading professional and learned Society in the field of computers and information systems.
  • CPSR: Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility - a non-profit, public interest organization concerned with the effects of computers and technology on society.
  • Human Factors and Ergonomics Society - Internet Technical Group - a community for professionals from industry, academia and government organizations who share a common interest in Internet technologies and related behavioural phenomena. Includes conference proceedings, jobs an information links.
  • IEEE Computer Society - one of the world's leading organization of computer professionals. One of the IEEE's special interest groups.

Artificial intelligence

  • GMD-Japan Research Laboratory - an independent research lab, founded as a collaborative research centre between the German institute Fraunhofer AIS and the Japanese city of Kitakyushu. Their scientific goal is to explain how autonomy can be achieved or enhanced, and use this distinctive feature to build technical systems like autonomous mobile robots.
  • Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research - JAIR is a refereed electronic journal, covering all areas of Artificial Intelligence.
