The following is a summary of the main subject divisions relevant to Archaeology as arranged in the Library. It is not a comprehensive list of all subjects covered. For each section of the Library, the Ordinary books are followed by the Quartos [oversize books] and then the printed journals.

Where to search for journal articles

  • Meta Lib ( York users only)
    A gateway to bibliographic databases, image databases, electronic journals and other Web resources available to members of the University. Includes guides and links to help.
    • To view a list of resources specific to your subject, click on the subjects listed under Sub Categories.
    • To view a list of electronic journals subscribed to by the University of York, click on the Find e-journal tab followed by e-journal list. Note: all electronic journals can also be accessed via the library catalogue.
  • ARCHway - journal locator and article citation index. The archaeology journal holdings of over 20 UK university, museum and private libraries united to create one searchable resource. Maintained by the Archaeology Data Service at the University of York.

  • ARCHSEARCH - catalogue of the Archaeology Data Service.
  • The Character of England: landscape, wildlife & natural features(Countryside Commission and English Nature) - The map and summary descriptions of all 181 character areas in England. The descriptions summarise the character of each area, and describe their main nature conservation and landscape features.

  • Archaeological Resource Guide for Europe - evaluated Internet resources covering European archaeology.
  • ArchNet - Virtual Library of Archaeology resources hosted by the Archaeological Research Institute at Arizona State University.
  • BUBL LINK: Archaeology - classified, searchable list of internet resources with brief descriptions. A nationally-funded service for the UK HE community, maintained by Strathclyde University.
  • Castles of Britain - dedicated to the study and promotion of British castles. Includes links to individual castle websites.
  • CBA guide to UK archaeology online - p art of the Council for British Archaeology website. Includes links to government agencies, national organisations, university departments, local societies, museums, and others.
  • Intute: Arts & Humanities - an information gateway to quality assured resources on the Internet selected by a network of UK universities for academic use. Covers archaeology, Classics, history and a range of arts and humanities subjects. Recommended.
  • Lyell Collection - a large integrated collection of online Earth science literature published by the Geological Society comprising their journals, special publications and key book series. Although the University of York does not subscribe to the full collection, free access is allowed to search and browse the content and view abstracts.
  • RUDI - Resource for Urban Design Information.
  • StudentZone - Archaeology subject section has links to the university departments teaching Archaeology, employers, societies and associations, and other archaeological websites.

National societies and other organisations

  • Archaeology Data Service - based at the University of York. The ADS aims to preserve digital data in the long term, and to promote and disseminate a broad range of data in archaeology. The ADS hosts AHDS Archaeology (the Archaeology section of the Arts & Humanities Data Service).
  • English Heritage - protects and promotes England's historic environment.
  • Historic Scotland - safeguards and promotes Scotland's historic environment.
  • ICOM - The International Council of Museums is the organisation of museums and museum professionals which is committed to the conservation and continuation of the world's natural and cultural heritage.
  • ICOMOS - The International Council on Monuments and Sites is a non-governmental organization of professionals, dedicated to the conservation of the world's historic monuments and sites.
  • Institute of Field Archaeologists - advances the practice of archaeology by promoting professional standards and ethics for conserving, managing, understanding and promoting enjoyment of heritage.
  • Museums Documentation Association - the UK's lead voice for documentation and the management of information about museum collections.
  • National Monuments Record - the public archive of English Heritage.
  • The National Trust - protects and promotes the nation's historic buildings and landscapes.
  • Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland - responsible for recording, interpreting and collecting information about buildings, sites, and ancient monuments in Scotland of archaeological, architectural and historical interest.
  • Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales - responsible for recording, interpreting and collecting information about buildings, sites, and ancient monuments in Wales of archaeological, architectural and historical interest.

Local societies and other organisations

  • Archaeology in York - local archaeology news from the City of York Council.
  • Humber Archaeology Partnership - the designated holder of information on archaeological sites and finds within Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.
  • Regional and local societies - links to a large number of local societies through the Council for British Archaeology guide to UK archaeology online.
  • West Yorkshire Archaeology Service - offers a range of archaeological services including surveys and excavations.
  • York Archaeological Trust - known for its investigations of the urban archaeological deposits of York some of which led to the creation of JORVIK. The Trust offers specialist services in artefact studies and curatorial skills, archaeological conservation, publication and IT.
  • Yorkshire Vernacular Buildings Study Group - exists to record information about the vernacular buildings of Yorkshire which is then contributed to the National Monuments Record.
