Secure Electronic Delivery
SED is a method of delivering documents direct to your desktop in electronic format using FileOpen. It is provided by the Interlending Service for articles supplied by the British Library.
Advantages include:
- Speed of service, no postal delays, using the Standard Delivery Service. For more urgent requests, which will have additional costs, contact ILDS
- Good quality printout
- Delivered to your desktop
- Easy access through your email address

Using FileOpen
The FileOpen plug in will have been installed on suported pcs accross campus. Staff can use Run Advertised Programmes to install the plugin on office supported pcs.
Using the FileOpen plugin will ensure that electronic documents delivered by the British Library will open correctly regardless of which version of Adobe Reader you are using. It is an alternative to Adobe Digital Editions and it is recommended that you use FileOpen to receive electronic documents. Adobe Digital Editions will continue to be supported by the Library for the time being.

- The article will be sent to you via email as with a web link to the document.
- Clicking on the link will download and open the document.
- The link cannot be used more than once.
- To open the document you must have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your PC.
- MAC users will need to see the information on the British Library's web page (see link below).
- You have 30 days to open the document once it appears in your inbox.
- You may need to cancel the option if you cannot access your email for any length of time.
- Although the document is delivered electronically, you must either read it on screen or print it off to make use of it.
- Make sure you have enough credit on your print account.
- You cannot store or retain the electronic copy for future use.
