Introduction

The Office of Health Economics Compendium of Health Statistics aims to be a leading source of statistics about health and health care in the UK (including international comparisons). The OHE Compendium includes sections on population, mortality and morbidity, health care expenditure, hospital services, and family health services.

Access to the OHE Compendium

All databases are accessible via MetaLib.

  • Find Metalib from the University homepage:
    follow either Student home | Library | MetaLib gateway (under Quick Links)
    or Staff home | Library | MetaLib gateway (under Quick Links)

When you get into MetaLib, choose the Find Database tab. Locate OHE Compendium of Health Statistics from the alphabetical list of databases and click on the title link.

A new window will open, providing you with access information, including the Username and Password needed for the Compendium. You may need to enter your IT Services username and password to view this information. Click on the link to OHE Compendium of Health Statistics. Click Login and enter the Compendium Username and Password. Click Log In.

Please log out when you have finished searching. Note: Only one user may access the Compendium at one time.

Starting your search

The display is split into three windows. The top window contains the Navigation Menu.

The left-hand window will display either the Contents List or the Search proforma. The right-hand window displays the results of any selection.

Items may be selected by scanning the table of Contents or by using the Search facility as outlined below.

Contents List

The Contents list is displayed when you first open the Compendium. To move to the Contents list at any other stage, click on the Contents icon.

  • To view the contents of any section, click on the closed book icon which will open the next level.
  • Click on the open book icon to close a section
  • Click on the document icon to view the Table, Box or Figure.

Search

Click on the Search icon to search the Compendium for words and phrases. Enter your terms in the Search phrase:box then click on Search.

Truncating

The * character may by used to truncate terms. For example, child* will find records containing the terms child, children, etc.

Combining terms

  • Use AND to specify that both terms should appear. For example, UK and mortality.
  • Use OR to search for either term. For example, child or infant.
  • Use parentheses (brackets) to group words together. For example, UK and (mortality or death).
  • Multiple words will be searched as a phrase. For example, infant death rate.

The results of your search will be displayed by type (document, or table/box/figure) with tables/boxes/figures grouped under Section.

Click on an item to display it in the right-hand window.

Displaying, printing and saving results

The right-hand window displays the results of your selection from the Contents list or from your Search results.

Record

Click on the Record icon to display as a full window the information contained in the right-hand window. The document can then be printed, saved or copied into other software applications.

Printing/saving figures and tables

Choose Record (see above) to display the figure or table in a separate browser window. From the browser File menu, choose Edit with Microsoft Excel. The item may then be printed or saved using Microsoft Excel.

Saving figures into Powerpoint

To save a figure into Powerpoint, click on the Powerpoint icon.

Click on the Search or Contents icons to go back to the Search or Contents screen.

Click on the References icon to display the details of all source documents used in compiling the OHE Compendium. Where appropriate, frequency of publication and other information is shown in italics.

Ending your search

To exit from OHE Compendium, click on the Logout icon: OHECHS logout.
