This page gives an overview of the timeline that the refurbishment worked to and it broadly outlines some of the improved facilities that are available in the Library and the Harry Fairhurst building.

Work Throughout Academic Year 09-10
Phase 1
- Refurbishment of the Second floor included:
- 122 study desk spaces
- IT study containing 16 PCs
- IT study containing 14 PCs
- 2 large group studies
- 12 single studies
- 1 collaborative study
- Improved lighting and shelving
- Re-shelving area
- Copy & print area
- WC facilities
- In addition:
- Refurbishment of the Roof
- Refurbishment of the Undercroft
Phase 2
- Refurbishment of the Third floor included:
- Over 30 study desk spaces
- Improved lighting and shelving
- WC facilities

Work Throughout Academic Year 10-11
Phase 3
Refurbishment of the
Harry Fairhurst building (formerly Computer Science) ran alongside that of the JB Morrell Library from October 2010 to April 2011. It provides a wide variety of IT-rich teaching, learning and research spaces. Access to the building is via a link corridor which is accessed from the JB Morrell Library.
- 500 study spaces - a mix of static and flexible furniture to meet a variety of study needs
- 56 seater IT Classroom (centrally bookable)
- 2 Teaching/Conference rooms (centrally bookable)
- Copy & Print facilities
- Dedicated postgraduate study area
- Music Collection & study (this will be housed in the JB Morrell Library until Summer 2012)
- DVD Collection (this will be housed in the JB Morrell Library until the Summer 2012)
- This newly refurbished building is also home to:
- Academic Liaision Librarians
- E-learning Development and Learning Enhancement Team
- IT Services Support Office
Phase 4
- Refurbishment of the First floor (south) included:
- 94 study desk spaces
- IT study room containing 14 PCs
- 3 medium group studies
- 1 collaborative study
- Improved lighting and shelving
- Informal seating area
- Copy & print area
- WC facilities
Phase 5
- Refurbishment of the First floor (north) included:
- 102 study desk spaces
- IT study containing 20 PCs
- 14 single studies
- Improved lighting and shelving
- Re-shelving area
- Relaxed seating area

Work Throughout Academic year 11-12
Continutation of Phase 5 (see above)
Phases 6 & 7
Refurbishment of the Ground floor (south) included:
- New, centrally positioned entrance
- Reception point and Help desk
- New Borrowing Point to incorporate improved self-issue facilities
- New Library Cafe
Refurbishment of the Ground floor (north) included:
- New Returns Point to incorporate a fully automated book sorter to reduce circulation turnaround time
- Morrell Lounge - a new informal quiet study area (this space is expected to be completed in a few weeks time)
