The Harry Fairhurst Building

To access the Harry Fairhurst Building enter through the JBM Library and continue through the link corridor.  The Harry Fairhurst building offers a welcoming and stimulating environment for learning and research. It provides over 500 new study spaces for students and researchers. Users can take books directly into the building from the Library, allowing easy access to study materials.

IT, study and research support teams are based on the first floor, including: the Academic Liaison Librarians; IT Support Office; IT Training Office; E-learning Development and Learning Enhancement teams.

A variety of study areas are provided, including:

  • group studies – rooms for single groups to work in. These rooms are non-bookable - just turn up and use them.
  • collaborative areas – open areas with flexible furniture that allow for multiple groups to work
  • research study – a study area specifically for researchers
  • research lounge – an informal area for researchers

The building includes a 55-seater IT classroom which can be booked centrally for teaching purposes. It also feature easy access to power to allow for the use of personal IT equipment and there is access to wi-fi throughout the building. 50 computers are also provided on the second floor for study use.

A research hotel is provided on the second floor, a suite of bookable rooms that visiting academic staff or researchers can reserve for their exclusive use as temporary areas for working. Bookings can be arranged for lengths of time to suit the individual. Each room in the research hotel will feature access to power, wireless networking, desk space and furniture. The hotel concept does not extend to the provision of sleeping arrangements, but does offer use of the research lounge.
