Opening hours

These are the opening hours for the University libraries.

To make sure you find up to date opening hours for other libraries we provide links to each library's guide or website from the Libraries menu on the left.

For quick reference here is an A to Z list of local libraries you can use.

24/7

From Monday 16 April until Monday 2 July the JB Morrell Library and the Harry Fairhurst building will be open 24 hours a day.

Full service hours
Monday to Friday 9am - 10pm
Saturday & Sunday 10am - 6pm

Self-service hours
Monday to Thursday 10pm - 9am
Friday 10pm - Saturday 10am
Saturday 6pm - Sunday 10am
Sunday 6pm - Monday 9am

To gain access to the buildings from 10pm - 8am staff or students will need to have a valid University or Library card.

Please note that visitors will not be able to access the JB Morrell Library and the Harry Fairhurst building between 10pm and 8am. If you are eligible to register as a member of the Library you will need to do so between 9am and 6pm.

What is the difference between full service hours and self-service hours?

During full service hours you have access to the full range of Library services including staff help and booking study rooms.

During self-service hours there are a few things you won’t be able to do. Specifically you won't be able to:

  • Take out items if your fines are over £20 unless you pay via self-service payment options
  • Take out/return Interlending items, theses, DVDs, locker keys, software, other equipment
  • Request change
  • Book a study room. During self-service hours the rooms are openly available for anyone to use.
  • Get help from Library staff or the IT Support Office

Self-service hours

There are some things you will not be able to do during self-service hours as staff are only here for your security.

During self-service hours you can:

  • Borrow items using self-issue machines
  • Return items using the book sorter
  • Borrow To be Collected items which you requested, using self-issue in the Key Texts area
  • Renew, request and book items via the Library Catalogue
  • Pay outstanding library fines and charges using the self-issue machine which has self-service payments attached (cash only) or the online store
  • Look at the Library's web pages from the Library Catalogue PCs to find information about the Library
  • Use the IT classrooms and study areas, or connect your laptop or mobile device to the wireless network
  • Use all the open access collections in the Library as well as online resources
  • Use different study spaces in the JB Morrell Library and the Harry Fairhurst Building
  • Eat and drink in the Library Cafe
  • Access IT support by calling +44 (0)1904 323838
  • Copy, print and scan using York Print Plus, and top up your account online or at the cash kiosk

There are a few things that you can't do during self-services hours.

Specialist services

Specialist staff are normally available during their office hours as listed below. We try to maintain these hours, but unforeseen circumstances may mean that staff are not available. In some cases staff may be available outside these hours, but you will need to ask them in advance.

Appointments are not necessary unless recommended below. In these cases, please contact the person you want to see in advance to make sure they are available when you want to meet them.

At times when specialist staff are not available, you can ask for help at Lending Services, but there may be some enquiries which can only be answered by the relevant specialist. Lending Services staff can give you contact details, or they can pass on your enquiry on your behalf.

Remember that during self-service hours you will not be able to get help with any enquiry.

The Library is closed on all public holidays, except the May Bank Holidays, when it is open normal term-time hours. Between Christmas and the New Year it is closed for the same period as the JB Morrell Library. Except 24 December when the opening hours are 9:00am - 12:30pm.
