Suggest items for Electronic Texts

What are Electronic Texts?

Electronic Texts are digitised versions of reading materials (journal articles and book chapters) provided under the CLA (Copyright Licensing Agency) licence. Items to be digitised may be identified either via EARL reading lists or by direct requests from departments.

What can I ask for?

You can request digitisation  providing the material already exists in the Library as a hard copy book or journal.

Your request must fall within what is permitted by the CLA. Both the University and the British Library strictly adhere to the CLA guidelines. For this reason, digitised material will only be available to students on your module and will not added to the Library catalogue.

Further details on what is permitted by the CLA can be found here: A five step guide to scanning under the CLA (PDF , 280kb)

If you have an EARL reading list you can use the 'I would like the Library to digitise this chapter' tick box  to request one chapter or article per module. Please include details of chapter title and/or page numbers in the Notes to the Library field.

University of York teaching staff without an EARL reading list can request material using either the book chapter form, or the journal article form.

How much does it cost?

This service is currently subsidised by the Library.

How long does it take?

If the material requiring digitisation is in stock in the Library as a hard copy, we aim to fulfil your request within 6 weeks. If the hard copy is not yet in stock (for example the item out on loan or it is a new item on order), we will need to reserve it and wait for it to be available.

If you know you have reading that requires digitisation, please let us know as soon as possible.

How will I know when it's ready for me to use?

When the material is ready, a link to it will be added to your EARL reading list. If you do not have an EARL list, the link will be emailed to you. Please note that the material can only be accessed by staff and students associated with the module for which it was requested.

If the request was generated via an EARL list, Library staff will add a link to the material under the relevant reading.
