This area of the Library website is being developed to give you advice and guidance in finding the information you need for your learning, teaching and research. New resources will be added as we develop them.
On this page you will find a variety of resources to help you find the information you need for your academic work, from essays to dissertations and research projects.
Academic Liaison Librarians are each responsible for a range of departments and have specialist knowledge of their information needs. They can help you in a variety of ways which are described below.
Academic Liaison Librarians continue to develop these resources and welcome your feedback and ideas.
If you need more help or have any suggestions please contact your Academic Liaison Librarian.
Have a look at Get started: finding information in your subject which is an introduction to locating, searching and evaluating information resources.
If you need more help you can:
Academic Liaison Librarians have written workbooks in many subject areas. The workbooks give you the opportunity to learn how to find the information you need in your own time and at your own pace.
We also provide more personal help, with a variety of options to suit your preferences. These are summarised below.
We offer an introduction to the libraries for all new students and staff.
Student sessions are timetabled into departmental induction programmes. The presentation and tour are designed to help you become familiar with the layout of the library, the facilities we provide, and how to search the Library Catalogue to find resources for your coursework.
Staff should contact your Academic Liaison Librarian for a personal introduction and discussion of your teaching and research needs.
The Library's online tutorials give introductions to using the Library Catalogue, using and understanding journals and evaluating websites. They take only a few minutes to work through and should give you an understanding of the principles involved in the these areas.
If you would like a more personal approach you can discuss your needs with your Academic Liaison Librarian.
Academic Liaison Librarians can help you one to one, or they can deliver more formal lectures, seminars and practical workshops to suit the needs of your group.
Sessions can be embedded in a course at an appropriate point in the curriculum (for example in a research methods or study skills module), or be ad hoc to suit the needs of the group.
Delivery and content can be tailored to help students and staff find information for anything from short essays to in-depth research. Content includes how to access electronic resources, effective literature searching and evaluating the information you find.
Many of the sessions provide practical experience in using resources. Most are supported by self-paced workbooks.
We also deliver advanced Managing information courses as part of the Graduate Training Unit's training programme.
University Teaching Committee has recommended that information literacy skills should be embedded in the curriculum and has approved generic information literacy learning outcomes developed by Academic Liaison Librarians in consultation with academic staff. More information is available from our Information literacy teaching web page.
