How to connect to electronic information resources on the Web
You can find out what resources you can use by looking at our Electronic Library web pages.
The information below will help you connect to Web resources when you've found the one you need. It will also help to answer:
- Do I need a username and password?
- What do I do if I'm working off campus?
Whether you are on or off campus, we strongly recommend you follow the links to electronic information resources which are provided by the Library on its web pages; in most cases, you will then be taken straight to the University of York login page where all you need to do is login with your York IT Services username and password.
The Library links to electronic information resources are as follows:
- Electronic journals (e-journals)
To access electronic journals use the Find e-Journal service, the
button, or 'Find it' link wherever it appears e.g. in YorSearch, the Classic Catalogue, in databases or other electronic resources.
- Databases and electronic book collections (e-books)
To access databases and e-book collections use the MetaLib gateway.
- Individual e-books
You can access individual e-books from links in YorSearch or the Classic Catalogue: - On campus - you will get access to the e-book without logging in, or be asked to login immediately at the University of York login page.
- Off campus - in most cases you will be asked to login immediately at the University of York login page; if you are not then you will need to look for a login link on the e-book web page. You should look for one of the links or options listed below; these will allow you to login via the University of York login page:
- Institutional Login
- Institutional Access
- Login via your home organisation
- Login via your home institution
- UK Access Management Federation Login
- EndNote Web
To access EndNote Web please see the Organise my information page.
When accessing electronic information resources with your York IT Services username and password you should only need to log in once during each browser session, even if you move between different resources.
A small number of individual resources do not allow access using a York IT Services username and password. If this is the case then you will need to use a unique username and password. Please see the section below for further details.
If you need more help, you can contact our Enquiry Service.
