Discussions and projects on electronic journals and publishing

  • At the crossroads: e-journals in the era of print cancellations - a list of the pros and cons of e-journals.
  • BioMed Central - publishes peer reviewed research across all areas of biology and medicine, with immediate, barrier-free access for all. 
  • Charlesworth Electronic Journal Award - an award which "aims to recognise excellent overall design, functionality and innovation in online and parallel online journals".
  • Crossref - a collaborative reference linking service. 
  • Electronic Libraries Programme: Electronic Journal Projects - projects funded by the Higher Education Funding Bodies in the UK.
  • Electronic Sources of Information: A Bibliography - compiled by Marian Dworaczek. A bibliography which deals with all aspects of electronic publishing and includes both print and non-print materials.
  • ESPERE Project - aims to encourage electronic submission and peer review of academic papers and establish appropriate standards.
  • HyperJournal - a discussion list devoted exclusively to electronic journals, especially those which publish on the World Wide Web. It is concerned with all aspects of the production and publication of electronic journals, particularly those managed by academics themselves.
  • Internet Free-Press - an online service for those interested in electronic publishing. Includes free web publishing resources, discussion forums and related links.
  • Internet Library of Early Journals - an eLib project which aims to create a digital library of 18th and 19th Century journals. It includes runs of Notes and Queries, Gentleman's Magazine, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Annual Register and The Builder.
  • JSTOR - a service subscribed to by the University of York Library which offers electronic access to complete back runs of journals in a variety of subjects.
  • Nature hosts online debate on the impact of the web on the publication of original research - launched 5th April 2001.
  • NESLI (National Electronic Site Licensing Initiative) - a JISC funded programme to deliver a national electronic journal service to the UK higher education and research community.
  • Open Archives Initiative - aims to enhance access to e-print archives by developing and promoting interoperability standards.
  • Open Journal Project - aims to provide a framework for publishing journals in a network environment such that maximum access to (and from) the publications is ensured.
  • Public Library of Science - an initiative aiming to organize support within the scientific community for online public libraries of science.
  • PubMed Central - a National Institute of Health (US) initiative that aims to establish a Web-based repository for barrier-free access to primary reports in the life sciences by January 2000.
  • Scholarly Electronic Publishing Bibliography - compiled by Charles W. Bailey, Jnr. A bibliography which covers scholarly electronic publishing on the Internet, and includes many references to publications about electronic journals.
  • SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Consortium) - an alliance of libraries that fosters expanded competition in scholarly communication. SPARC creates "partnerships" with publishers who are developing high quality, economical alternatives to existing high-priced publications.
  • SuperJournal - a major collaboration between publishers, universities, and libraries to identify the factors that make electronic journals successful and to develop successful models for network publishing. The project will develop a wide range of multimedia journals in the sciences and social sciences, make them available to participating user communities, and perform detailed research on the factors that influence success.
