How to use past exam papers

Using past exam papers can be an effective study strategy for preparing for exams, as it provides you with a clear understanding of what to expect in terms of format, types of questions, and the level of difficulty. Some things to keep in mind in improving your exam preparation:

  1. Remember each exam has its own format and structure. It may be different this year to the one used in previous exams, so make sure you're familiar this year's protocols.
  2. If you want to actually run through an entire past exam paper, try doing so under exam conditions. Time yourself, and analyse how well you managed your time as well how successful you were in completing the actual paper.

  3. By looking at multiple past exam papers, you can identify patterns in the types of questions that are asked. This can help you anticipate what kind of questions might be asked in the actual exam.
  4. Seek help if needed. If you find that you are struggling with certain topics or concepts, don't hesitate to seek help from your tutor or lecturer.

  5. Don't rely solely on past exam papers. While past exam papers are a useful tool for exam preparation, they should not be the only resource you use. Review the course material, attend lectures and tutorials, and consider forming study groups with your course-mates.

Finally: remember the library will be open 24 hours a day during the Common Assessment Periods. We don't want you to work all night, but we do want you to have the maximum flexibility as to how and when you revise.

Good luck!
