Visiting check list
for first time users
- Do you have clear idea of what you want to find out? Try and focus your research questions before you come.
- What type of records do you want to look at? Try checking our lists to make sure we have the records you want. Ring us if you would like to discuss anything before your visit on (01904) 321166.
- Please note that if you are using photographic material or material from the Atkinson Brierly Collection you will need to give us at least 24 hour notice. This is so we can allow time for acclimatisation, in the case of photographs, and time for conservation assessment in the case of the Atkinson Brierly material.
- If you are looking at material from a period which may mention people who are still alive you are strongly advised to contact us in advance. Whilst material of this date may be available for research there will be data protection considerations and we would not like you to make a visit to see material which cannot be issued.
- Bring a pencil - the type without an erase on the end. No pens or erasers are allowed in the searchrooms.
- Only your pencils, paper (up to 20 loose sheets of A4, bound notebooks must be smaller than A4) and laptops (without their cases) are allowed into the searchroom. All other personal items must be placed in a locker. Staff reserve the right to inspect items you take into or out of the searchrooms.
- No cameras, scanners or other copying equipment are allowed in the searchrooms. If you want to use a camera please make read our leaflet Using your own camera (PDF
, 40kb) and make sure you have talked through everything with searchroom staff in advance of your visit.
- In consideration to researchers and staff we do not allow the use of mobile phones in the reception, searchroom or microform room. You will be asked to lock your phone away in a locker.
- The searchrooms are deliberately on the cool side for the sake of the archives, which do not like fluctuations in temperature and humidity. You may like to consider bringing a jumper or cardigan with you (outdoor jackets and coats are not allowed in the searchrooms).
- Please read our terms and conditions for use of archive materials before you visit us. You will be given additional information on your arrival.
