Spanish@lunchtime 1 - course content

Prerequisites

The course is ideal for those with no previous knowledge of the language, but who are keen on visiting the countries where Spanish is spoken and communicating with their people. It is open to students, staff and members of the public.

8 × 1 hour classes; groups of up to 15 participants.

Aims

The course has two main aims. The first is to equip you with the key language skills to make the most of your next leisure or business trip to the countries where the target language is spoken. Secondly, you will get a grounding in a language which could provide the foundation for more in-depth study later on.

Objectives

At end of the course, you will be able to:

  • greet people, introduce yourself and enquire about others (eg. work and family)
  • give out your phone number, email address and spell your name
  • order food, drinks, and understand menus
  • make travel arrangements, eg. buy tickets, check departure times, book a hotel room and enquire about facilities
  • write a quick email or text message to confirm an arrangement
  • fill in forms with personal details, eg. when completing an on-line registration form
  • understand basic written instructions, signs and short communications
  • understand simple information received in aural form
  • have a knowledge of basic grammatical structures for the language in question
  • feel confident about pronouncing words correctly

Teaching method

A communicative approach will be used throughout the course with an emphasis on speaking in real-life situations. You will be supplied with a tailor-made language guide, covering everything included in the course.

Time commitment

Alongside the weekly class, you will be able to consolidate your new skills by practising with a variety of on-line activities, such as vocabulary building games and listening to simple dialogues.

Evaluation and certification

This course will not be subject to evaluation but students who complete the course can be provided with an attendance certificate.

Spanish@lunchtime 1 PLUS - course content

Prerequisites

The course is aimed at those with a rusty or basic knowledge of Spanish. It is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff and members of the public.

8 × 1 hour classes; groups of up to 15 participants

Aims

The key aim of the course is to enable students to develop their language skills so that they are able to communicate effectively and confidently in Spanish in everyday situations.

Objectives

At end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • communicate in Spanish with others by phone, email and in person
  • make and alter plans, bookings and schedules
  • find out about places of interest, locations, events, directions, equipment, travel
  • seek medical attention, describe symptoms and make appointments
  • explain and understand problems and make complaints
  • understand straightforward communications and documents in Spanish
  • write brief emails, notes and memos in Spanish
  • structure their use of the language according to simple grammatical rules

Teaching method

The approach used will emphasise real-life situations. Classes will be conducted primarily in the target language. A tailor-made language guide will be used to accompany the course, as well as Internet, video and audio material.

Time commitment

The tutor will guide participants to interactive online language resources

Evaluation and certification

This course will not be subject to evaluation but students who complete the course can be provided with an attendance certificate.
