Prerequisites

The course is aimed at those with no previous knowledge of Portuguese. It is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, staff and members of the public.

Contact time

19 × 2-hour classes plus end-of-year exams (listening, oral and written); groups of up to 20 participants.

Aims

The key aim of the course is to help you develop basic language skills in all four main areas (listening, speaking, reading and writing), so that you are able to communicate in basic Portuguese and understand what people say to you in a variety of social situations.

Objectives

At the end of the course you will be able to:

  • talk about yourself (eg. family, friends, study or work) in simple terms and understand when others tell you about themselves
  • order food and drinks, book a table and understand menus
  • ask the way and understand directions
  • book a hotel room and enquire about facilities
  • make purchases, ask for advice and pay
  • make travel arrangements, buy tickets and check travel options
  • provide basic details about what you have done and plan to do
  • feel confident about pronouncing Portuguese correctly
  • write a short letter on a familiar topic
  • understand simple passages in Portuguese
  • talk about things in the present, past and future in a variety of contexts
  • listen and understand native speakers

Teaching method

A communicative approach will be used throughout the course with an emphasis on real-life situations. Grammar will be taught in context and general terms. You will need to obtain a textbook to support your studies (details will be provided by your tutor).

Time commitment

Alongside the class, you will be expected to spend around 2-3 hours each week on private study, as advised by your tutor.

Evaluation and certification

This course will be subject to end-of-year examinations and certification. An LFA certificate will be awarded to participants who pass the end-of-year exams (oral, listening and written).
