Course content

Prerequisites

The course is ideal for those with no previous knowledge of the language, but who are interested in visiting Poland and communicating with Polish people. It is open to students, staff and members of the public.

8 × 1 hour classes; groups of up to 15 participants.

Aims

The course has two main aims. The first is to equip you with the key language skills to make the most of your next leisure or business trip to the countries where the target language is spoken. Secondly, you will get a grounding in a language which could provide the foundation for more in-depth study later on.

Objectives

At end of the course, you will be able to:

  • greet people, introduce yourself and enquire about others (eg. work and family)
  • give out your phone number, email address and spell your name
  • order food, drinks, and understand menus
  • make travel arrangements, eg. buy tickets, check departure times, book a hotel room and enquire about facilities
  • write a quick email or text message to confirm an arrangement
  • fill in forms with personal details, eg. when completing an on-line registration form
  • understand basic written instructions, signs and short communications
  • understand simple information received in aural form
  • have a knowledge of basic grammatical structures for the language in question
  • feel confident about pronouncing words correctly

Teaching method

A communicative approach will be used throughout the course with an emphasis on speaking in real-life situations. You will be supplied with handouts covering the material studied in the course.

Time commitment

Alongside the weekly class, you will be able to consolidate your new skills by practising with some online activities.

Evaluation and certification

This course will not be subject to evaluation but students who complete the course will receive an attendance certificate.
