Discussion during a seminar

Law and Society Stream

The Law and Society Stream is made up of optional modules which focus on law in its social, cultural and theoretical contexts which build upon existing expertise and research interests in law related subjects across YLS and the University as a whole. The Law and Society stream builds upon the substantive knowledge and skills acquired during the Foundation Stream in order to develop a deeper, critical understanding of the relevant rules and principles of law in certain areas.

The stream also:
• introduces students to the economic, ideological, philosophical, political and social aspects of the law and its role in society
• enables students to appreciate a range of potential methodologies used to examine legal problems
• endorses an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of law which provides students with an opportunity of studying parallel theoretical frameworks developed within other disciplines in the humanities, sciences and social sciences
• provide students with an understanding of an illustrative range of current debates in policy and law and how those debates are illuminated across different disciplines
• to progress students understanding of the bridge between the theory and practice of law

Typical examples would see links between YLS and existing law courses taught in departments as diverse as the Management School, Philosophy, Social Policy, Psychology, Environment and others. The subjects offered in the Law and Society stream is largely indicative and represents the overlap between the research interests of these departments and YLS teaching staff.

Examples include
• Law and Society* (compulsory in Year 1)
• Professionalism and Ethics (compulsory in Year 2)
• Applied Human Rights
• Criminal Justice
• Environmental Law and Policy
• Law and Economics
• Legal theory
• Law and Philosophy
• Housing Law and Policy
• Industrial Relations and the Law

Students will also have the option of doing a dissertation within the Law and Society Stream in their final year.
