Centre for Advanced Studies in Language and Communication

The Centre for Advanced Studies in Language and Communication is an innovative interdisciplinary research centre for the study of language and communication in interaction.

Forensic Speech Science

York is a leading centre for research and teaching in forensic speech science: the application of linguistics, phonetics and acoustics to legal investigations and proceedings.

Phonological Development

Our group specializes in the study of phonological development. We offer the only research-led taught MA programme specifically dedicated to this topic. Our research focuses on infants and toddlers, including observational studies of production and experimental studies of word recognition and word learning.

Centre for Linguistic History and Diversity

Through generous funding from the University of York, the Centre for Linguistic History and Diversity was created in 2013. The Centre hosts several projects which address formal aspects of the nature and history of linguistic diversity.

Minimalist Syntax Group

The work of our group focuses on syntax from a minimalist standpoint. Our work focuses on formal issues in minimalist syntax, the nature of the interfaces of syntax especially with semantics and pragmatics, and the formal nature of linguistic variation.
