Streaming service

Welcome to the home page of the Streaming Service project, a collaboration between IT Services, the E-Learning team, the Web Office, and the A.V. Centre. In summer 2009 the project switched its focus towards implementing production on-demand streaming services for use by both the University web site and the VLE. These services are now live and include the following:

  • Public streaming of media stored in 'dropboxes' available to every department
  • Secure streaming of media managed within the VLE CMS, and published to VLE course sites
  • Online publishing wizards for VLE, Web CMS and general web use, making embedding media into web sites easy
  • A customised player, designed to be as widely accessible as possible
  • Media conversion services provided by the E-Learning team and the A.V. Centre (where resources allow)

While there are no concrete plans for further improvements, there are several directions which could be of interest. These include support for live streaming, dynamic bandwidth detection, restricting access to dropbox streams and so on. If you are interested in any of these areas, please contact IT Services by emailing itsupport@york.ac.uk.
