IPUP is working with I-Hear-Too on a new project - The Stories of the Stones. I-Hear-Too is a research group hosted by Audiolab in the University of York's Electronics Department, and funded by the AHRC/EPSRC Science and Heritage programme. Its aim, broadly, is to explore the ways in which audio and acoustics research can be employed in the interpretation, understanding and representation of heritage materials and artefacts.
The Stories of the Stones is an interdisciplinary research project that brings together partners from across the arts, humanities and engineering at the Universities of York and Huddersfield, Arup Acoustics and the Digital Design Studio at the Glasgow School of Art, and Hewlett-Packard Labs, as well as heritage stakeholders York Museums' Trust and the National Centre for Early Music.
The focus for this project will be the virtual reconstruction of St Mary's Abbey, York, from its constituent stonework, guided by the work of York Museums' Trust in its development of this site as a key visitor attraction for the City. Aspects of this project will also feature in current plans for Celebrating the Festival of Britain in York 1951-2011.
