Boosting Public Participation in Heritage
IPUP wins funding from Arts Council England & The British Museum
The award to IPUP is to fund a new initiative to support museums and cultural heritage organizations who want to forge participatory relationships with the public. IPUP will lead a partnership of four heritage organizations to build a user-friendly portal of resources and accompanying regional meetings to encourage sharing research and skills among heritage professionals.

Supporting Practice in Participation
16th October 2012
Project Board Meeting for "Supporting Practice in Participation" hosted at the British Museum. Following-on from the successful "Cultural Equalities Now" conference last year, IPUP has continued to develop work on bridging research and practice in the field of participation and widening engagement with heritage. IPUP has strengthened the focus of this work in partnership with the Diversity in Heritage Group, the Collections Trust and the British Museum, under guidance from Arts Council England. The purpose of the ongoing project is to promote skills-sharing and knowledge transfer among practitioners and researchers. The organizations in the partnership will assess, scope, pilot and evaluate a user-friendly, research rich data portal and a set of regional networking meetings. An announcement about the funding stream from Arts Council England to support this work will follow shortly.
Digital Heritage Meeting
2nd October 2012
IPUP report circulated about the digital strategy outlined by the City Council - working in partnership with Visit York - and the opportunities for other institutions to partner with the platform to allow their collections and content to be disseminated through this wider umbrella - a framework where other content-rich individual apps be aligned, so that the York City Council platform may act as a signpost and directory.

Helen Weinstein: Announcement of Fellowship at Cambridge
October 2012
Professor Helen Weinstein has taken up a Fellowship at Cambridge, where she will complete her book entitled The Public Past: History, Meaning and Society. Helen will remain associated with the University as Visiting Research Professor for the Public Understanding of the Past. The ongoing funded projects with IPUP will therefore continue and be organized by Professor Weinstein.

Exploring York's Changing Cityscape
Sunday 26th August
IPUP Researchers invite the public to three walking tours of York's historic centre. All walks are free and leave from the steps of the Yorkshire Museum, Museum Gardens.
Launched with York Museums Trust and featuring new trail leaflets with accompanying podcasts and apps.
No tickets needed
- 11am: Walking with the Romans: Daily life in Eboracum
- 2pm: Jewish History Trail: Life, death and burial from the medieval period to the twentieth century
- 4pm: Experiencing the Great War: York in World War One
New Intern Opportunities for Summer and Autumn 2012
IPUP interns will be in a strong position to compete for a number of opportunities with London multi-media companies. Historyworks is looking for keen history interns needed for an exciting new multi-media project working in partnership with Ballista Media. There is shortly to be announced a similar process for a Historyworks project in partnership with October Films where we are looking for Research Assistants to work on a television documentary for Channel 4 and PBS. Temi Odumosu Welcomed to IPUP as new Research Associate and the Experienced Researcher on the Eurotast Project

Temi will be working with Helen Weinstein at IPUP to develop multimedia products and public engagement with the history of the transatlantic slave trade, contested pasts, themes of race and difference.

Catherine Oakley Welcomed to IPUP as new Research Associate to work on Eurotast

IPUP Interns Invite the Public to Meet them at Fairfax House for Free Visits

IPUP interns are working with IPUP Research Associate, Nuala Morse, to talk to the public for the “Residents Go Free” day at Fairfax House this weekend, inviting the public to follow-up from their BBC appeal to share memories about the St George’s Cinema, Castle Street, in operation form 1921 to 1965. BBC Radio York Showcases IPUP Project Asking the Public for their Memories of St George’s Cinema 1921 to 1965

IPUP student interns Jack and Claire starred on the BBC Radio York show with Elly Fiorentini sharing the progress of their IPUP project on the history of St George’s Cinema and asking for the public to come forward to contribute to the Oral History project developed by Fairfax House in partnership with IPUP. BBC Series Shaped by IPUP Director & IPUP Interns – “Brick by Brick: Rebuilding Our Past”

The IPUP Director, Helen Weinstein worked closely with the series Director, Caroline Ross-Pirie to guide the research and narratives about the reconstruction of buildings brick by brick revealing the social history of their function and place. First programme is based in Hendon and the story of aviation pioneer Claude Grahame-White, presented by Dan Cruickshank and Charlie Luxton. IPUP interns played a key role in the research for the series, and there is a great shot of history student, Alice Ankeny, in the first episode leading the Hendon neighbours in to unveil the rebuild !

"The York Jewish History Trail" to mark 1190 Massacre of the Jews at Clifford's Tower and App Launch

All Welcome! Free. No tickets Necessary. Meet at the steps to the Yorkshire Museum ready to depart at 2.00pm.
Walking tour led by Professor Helen Weinstein, of 60 minutes duration ending up with free entrance to Clifford's Tower, kindly facilitated by the staff at English Heritage. This walk is conducted
in partnership with York Museums Trust to pilot a new App on 16th March and so please bring your mobile devices if you have one to test out the useability.
This trail has been researched, devised and designed by postgraduate history students working under the guidance of the City Archaeologist, John Oxley, and the Director of IPUP, Helen Weinstein.

IPUP wins funding for Public Engagement with the History of Science

IPUP has another successful application for funding for an AHRC Research Network, this time with our partners at the Science Museum, led by Chief Curator Tim Boon, with academics from the departments of Computer Science and History at the University of York. IPUP has played a key role in the EU FP7 research project on the impact of the Transatlantic Slave Trade which offers 15 funded positions for young career researchers. The post of Experienced Researcher will be hosted at IPUP and the application process is now closed. Please do not send in any further enquiries. Walking tour led by Professor Helen Weinstein with City Archaeologist John Oxley and IPUP student interns. Free and unticketed. All Welcome! Meet at the steps to the Yorkshire Museum.
This trail has been researched, devised and designed by postgraduate history students working under the guidance of the City Archaeologist, John Oxley, and the Director of IPUP, Helen Weinstein.
Explore the History of York with a new tour of the city and discover one thousand years of York's Jewish past from buildings of the Norman period up to the site of York's last synagogue, closed in 1975.
IPUP Intern students will provide the trail map, web resources and a podcast. If you want to take this as a self-guided trail, please see IPUP's Jewish History Trail webpage.

Translating Freedom
Debating Multidirectional Memory and the Holocaust with Professor Michael Rothberg

Organised by IPUP and the Centre for Applied Human Rights (CAHR) in partnership with the Centre for Modern Studies (CMoDS). This lecture will launch "Translating Freedom" as an AHRC Research Network for 2012, emerging out of the intellectual discussions held in the IPUP Seminar series over the past two years and our more recent reading group "Translating Freedom".
We are delighted to host Michael Rothberg, Professor of English, Comparative and World Literature at the University of Illinois, and author of books including "Multidirectional Memory: Remembering the Holocaust in the Age of Decolonization".
