IPUP students contribute to new history podcast

Posted on 25 September 2023

IPUP is collaborating on a new history podcast that traces the story of York from the end of the last Ice Age to the present day.

Text reads: Historic City

The 'History City' podcast started when locally-based radio and podcast producer Guy Morgan of Soundstagenorth couldn’t find a podcast that tackled the full sweep of York’s history. So he decided he would have to make one. In search of historical researchers and expert guests to interview, he contacted IPUP, who funded three internships for students to work on the show. PhD student Katie Vernon, MA student George Young and undergraduate Harvey Mellor spent a month of the summer vacation researching episodes that cover 1100 to 1800. Their research is informing upcoming episodes as History City reaches the post Norman Conquest period of York’s story with The Harrying of the North.

“The students did an incredible amount of work” Guy says, “The main problem is trying to pour the gallons of research produced into the pint pot of a podcast. Although we can’t fit it all into the initial episodes, it sparks ideas for plenty of other stories which we can investigate in future series.”
