International Study Centres (ISC) are short summer courses open to York students of all disciplines and all levels of study (including postgraduates). You'll be part of a group of students from York and spend two to five weeks exploring a topic and visiting areas of interest. No prior knowledge of the subjects is required.

India ISC

India - who can attend:

The International Study Centre to India is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students from any degree programme. No prior subject knowledge is required.

You will join a group of students from the Universities of York and Hull on the two week programme.

India - programme:

  • The topic for the programme is ‘Modern vs. Historic India’
  • Lectures may include: Life and Teachings of Ghandi, British rule in India, and Indian Economy
  • Excursions include Agra Fort, Taj Mahal and ISKON Temple among others
  • Visits to NGO’s, start up firms and elephant rescue centre
  • Bollywood dancing and Indian culinary sessions

India - accommodation and meals:

Participants will stay in university accommodation at O.P. Jindal Global University for the first three nights. The rest of the time will be spent in basic hotel accommodation.

Some meals are included in the cost of the programme.

India - costs

The programme cost will include tuition, accommodation and flights.

India - visa

It is your responsibility to apply for the right type of visa if you need one. Check your eligibility and any restrictions/timelines before you apply internally for the programme. However, do not apply for a visa until you have accepted your offer on the programme from the Global Programmes team.

You need a visa to travel to India unless you are an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder.

General information about visas will be provided to students who are offered a place on the programme. For now, we suggest you have a quick look at how to apply for a visa from the Indian Bureau of Immigration. Depending on your requirements you may be able to apply for:

India - funding

There are a limited number of bursaries you can apply for through the University of York to help towards covering the costs of the programme and travel arrangements. They are competitive and will be distributed on a needs basis but are open for applications from all students.

Your eligibility for partial or full funding will be evaluated as part of your internal application for the ISC.

We also recommend you check eligibility and apply for funding from the York Futures Scholarship to help with the costs of the programme.

George Mason University, Fairfax, USA

The Washington Summer Institute

GMU - who can attend:

The summer programme is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students from any discipline who wish to develop their understanding of U.S. politics, culture and law.

You will join other students from all over the world on the two-week Washington Summer Institute programme.

GMU - programme:

  • The two-week Washington Summer Institute program will run from 30 June - 13 July 2024.
  • 20 hours of class time.
  • Gain insight into three aspects of the American experience while enjoying Mason’s beautiful campus and all the opportunities proximity to Washington DC provides.
  • Visit U.S. landmarks like the Capitol Building, Library of Congress, Mount Vernon, and more.
  • Watch Independence Day fireworks on the National Mall and experience a baseball game.

GMU - accommodation and meals:

Participants will live in Mason dormitories on the Fairfax campus for the duration of their program. Mason's traditional-style dormitories offer shared rooms with another resident of the same gender and a communal bathroom. Mason is located just 24 kilometres outside of Washington, D.C. with access to the Metro and other public transportation options. Amenities include free laundry machines, wifi, and activity rooms. Breakfast is included in the cost of the programme, but all other meals are not. There are on campus dining halls as well as a variety of restaurants nearby.

GMU - costs:

$2,950 (USD) per student. This fee will include housing on campus with breakfast, 20 hours of class time, site visits and on-campus activities. The cost does not include flights to or from Washington, DC, visa fees, most lunches and dinners, you will need to budget for these costs separately.

GMU - visa:

You are responsible for checking what type of visa you may need to take part in the programme.

The Washington Summer Institute is designed to enhance the experience of those who want to explore DC as tourists, not as students. Mason cannot support applications for F-1 visas for these short-term programs. However, participants are eligible to attend these programs on visitor B-1 and B-2 visas.

International Summer Institute for Business Management

UVic - who can attend:

The ISIBM is open to all undergraduate students from any discipline who wish to develop a fundamental understanding of business skills and tools to succeed in today’s global marketplace.

You will join other students from all over the world on the four week International Summer Institute for Business Management programme.

UVic - programme:

  • The International Summer Institute for Business Management (ISIBM) is an intensive four-week program taught by award-winning professors from the Gustavson School of Business at the University of Victoria in Canada.
  • Topics covered include: Business Communication, Entrepreneurship, Service Management and International Business.
  • Improve your intercultural awareness that will prepare you for further studies abroad and international business
  • Improved business communication skills (oral, written, presentation and interpersonal skills)
  • Experience Canadian university-level education
  • Meet, study and live with students from around the world
  • Social and cultural activities and on-campus housing included
  • Canada Day Experience (first four days of programme)

UVic - accommodation and meals:

Students will stay in campus residences – the Commonwealth Village clusters. Students have a private bedroom and share a kitchen, living room, dining room and washrooms with 3 other students.

The campus is a 10 minute walk from the beach, local supermarkets and entertainment venues. Libraries, galleries, bus exchange, movie theatre and athletics and recreation centres with swimming pools are located on campus (these services may be at additional cost).

Students will have a meal card to use around campus in restaurants, cafes and student cafeterias.

UVic - costs:

$5,750+ tax (CAD) per student. This fee includes tuition, course materials, activity program, meal card, orientation/city tour, on-campus accommodation, graduation banquet.

If you are accepted to the programme a non-refundable fee of $500 (CAD) + tax will be required.

The cost does not include flights to or from Victoria, visa fees, you will need to budget for these costs separately.

UVic - visa:

You are responsible for checking what type of visa you may need to take part in the programme.

You may be eligible to study in Canada for less than 6 months without a study permit if you have valid visitor status. Depending on your situation, you may need one of the following:
