Leslie has longstanding research and teaching interests in the fields of services for children, child protection and well-being, and social exclusion. Much of Leslie's work is underpinned by an interest in organisational dynamics. She has worked extensively with many organisations to assist them in carrying out their own research and in devising dissemination and utilisation programmes. Research interestsChildren, safeguarding and well-being, social exclusion. Care services and housing choices for older people. Organisational dynamics. Mixed methods research; participatory research. Current and recent projectsLeslie was co-author of the Department of Health ‘Messages from Research’ overview of residential child care research Children Looked After Away From Home: Messages from Research (1998). She researched staff dynamics and prevailing cultures in residential child care in that initiative and since has been principal investigator for a mixed methods project about leadership and management in children’s homes. This was funded under the Department of Health Costs and Effectiveness of Services to Children in Need initiative. She collaborated with the Centre for Housing Policy ( CHP) at the University of York in a Joseph Rowntree Foundation funded evaluation of innovative housing and care models for later life. Leslie has been involved recently in a piece of partnership research with a local Sure Start programme and is currently carrying out DCSF/DH funded research about adolescent neglect with colleagues at York and in collaboration with the NSPCC and The Children's Society. Leslie shares with Marilyn Crawshaw (SPSW) the regional co-ordination of Making Research Count (York), a national collaborative research dissemination initiative working in partnership with local authorities and relevant bodies which contributes to the development of research-informed, evidence-based practice.
