Health and Social Care (Adults)
The Health and social care (Adults) Research Group is headed by Professor Gillian Parker. Research carried out by this team focuses on the individual and collective views and experiences of people coping with disability or chronic illness and their families across the life course – particularly their experiences and evaluations of publicly-funded services. A major area of interest across projects within the team is on how, through using services and other formal and informal support arrangements, people can exercise choice and control over their lives and maximise their independence and well-being.
We have established a Consultation Group which informs our research procedures and helps us to maintain close links with the issues that affect adults and older people who use health and social care services, and their carers.
SPRU is one of the founding members of the national School for Social Care Research. The School's mission is to develop the evidence base for adult social care practice in England by commissioning and conducting world-class research. It is funded by the National Institute for Health Research. Professor Caroline Glendinning is an Executive Director of SSCR and works alongside leaders from five other research units to create an imaginative and pioneering research programme. This research aims to help improve the lives of adults who use social care, their families and carers.
