Children and Young People's Social Work Team

The Children and Young People's Social Work Team joined SPRU in January 2008. Before that it was called the The Social Work Research and Development Unit (SWRDU) which was established in 1992. It was a sister research unit to SPRU at the University of York. The two units merged in order to combine their mutual research strengths in the area of children, families and young people. The team has 13 research staff and is led by Professor Nina Biehal. It receives funding from government departments, charitable trusts and local authorities.

The Children and Young People's Social Work Team's work focuses mainly on social work and associated services for children and young people. It includes research, dissemination, consultancy and service development in the areas of services for:

  • vulnerable children and young people
  • young people in care
  • young people leaving care.
