VOLUME AND NATURE OF PRIMARY CARE RESEARCH
A feasibility study for an international comparison of the quality of primary care research
Background
The Society for Academic Primary Care (SAPC) Heads of Departments Group (HDG) sought to 'benchmark' the quality of primary care research in the UK against that in other countries, to inform the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) panel for the primary care unit of assessment (UOA8) in RAE 2008. The SAPC commissioned CRD to assess the potential volume and nature of primary care research since 2000 being published in the UK, USA and other developed countries to inform the methods of the benchmarking exercise.Findings
The feasibility study showed that approximately 17,500 publication records since 2000 relate to primary care in the UK or were carried out by UK researchers. Approximately 28,000 records for the USA and smaller numbers of records for other comparator countries were identified. Assessments of the volume of research by broad category were also produced.
