This research was begun in April 1996, and
was commissioned by the London Planning Advisory
Committee (LPAC). The Cemetery Research Group,
working in conjunction with Halcrow Fox, completed
a survey of all cemeteries in London opened
after 1850 and cemeteries over 5 acres opened
before that date. The research assessed the
current and projected future demand for burial
space in London, using data on space remaining
in existing cemeteries calculated burial capacity
in each local authority area. The research
concluded that burial space in Inner London
is extremely limited (less than 10 years' space
remaining). The supply of space in Outer London
boroughs is much less limited (100 years remaining),
but the location of the supply is patchy, and
some boroughs have only minimal capacity. The
research also explored the impact of different
reuse scenarios on cemeteries as areas of open
space. A report was produced by the London
Planning Advisory Committee in January, 1997.
