Bretherton, J. & Pleace, N. (2008) Residents' views of new forms of high density affordable living, Coventry/York: Chartered Institute of Housing/Joseph Rowntree Foundation. PDF

BACKGROUND: (SEE ALSO PROJECT PAGES)

This research is focused on the views and experiences of residents within innovative forms of affordable high density housing in the UK. The specific research objectives are:

  • to understand the process of decision making which leads people to move into high density housing, including what attracted them to developments, any factors that made them hesitate, and the extent to which their housing choices were constrained;
  • to explore residents' views on the positive and negative aspects of living in affordable high density housing, and in particular to interrogate the impact of housing design, housing management, the social and economic mix of residents, patterns of use, and the wider urban context within which high density developments are situated;
  • to clarify the medium and long term housing aspirations of residents in new affordable high density housing.

The research involves a questionnaire survey, focus groups and diary interviews with residents in eight exemplar developments of new affordable high density housing across the UK.

The study directly informs current policy development in the provision of affordable and higher-density housing, particularly with regards to the impact of housing design and the management of social cohesion and anti-social behaviour in higher density developments. These issues are currently core concerns within housing policy in the UK nations.
