BACKGROUND

Due to increasing longevity and falling birth rates, all industrialised nations will see profound demographic changes which will have profound impacts on all aspects of our society. Governments must consider the impoications of such change and shape policy to address the needs of an ageing society.

With this in mind, CLG has commissioned CHP to carry out a project with the following objectives:

  • To describe the key features of the current housing situation of older people
  • To understand the implications of an ageing population on a future housing market by developing scenarios based on current trends
  • To understand older people's housing requirements and future aspirations
  • To consider the implications of the above objectives for a National Housing Strategy for an Ageing Society

To meet these objectives, research will include:

  • Analysis of national data sets
  • Identification of patterns of supply and demand
  • A review existing research on older people's expectations and aspirations
  • Modelling future characteristics of elderly households
  • Focus groups to augment the existing research on requirements and aspirations
