How to Enrol

If you are considering enrolling on to one of our adult education evening and day classes, please do not leave it until the last moment to apply. Sadly, we are sometimes forced to cancel a course due to lack of numbers, only to be faced with a sudden flurry of interest after the cancellation has been made. You can imagine how disappointing and frustrating this situation is for everybody involved. Your early enrolment is therefore greatly appreciated; we have three ways in which you can enrol:

  • Online: You can register and pay for all courses via the University's Online Store at https://store.york.ac.uk/ or by using the links by individual courses.
  • By post: Please complete the application form at the back of the annual brochure and post it with your cheque made payable to - The University of York. If you don't have a copy of our brochure you can request one by e-mailing lifelonglearning@york.ac.uk
  • In person: Alternatively you may wish to enrol in person at the Centre – we are open Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4pm. Directions to the Centre can be found here.

New For 2011/12, You can also enrol at the Open Day Events which will be held at the King’s Manor on the 6th and 7th of September – details below:

Open Events and 25th Anniversary Party

This year, we are pleased to offer you the chance to come along and meet us in person prior to signing up for courses.
Held on Tuesday 6th September from 2–5pm at the King’s Manor and then again on Wednesday 7th September from 10am–12 noon, you will have the chance to meet some of our tutors and staff, ask questions, and register your place on a course if you haven’t done so over the summer.

We are also holding a celebratory event for students on the evening of Tuesday 6th September from 6–9pm at the King’s Manor, where tutors will again be present and registrations taken as we look back on the last quarter of a century of learning provision within the local community.
This free event is by ticket only, so please do call 01904 328473 or email lifelonglearning@york.ac.uk in advance to secure your place.

Fees

The fee for each course depends on whether it is non-accredited or accredited, and also whether it is shorter or longer than the traditional 10-week non-accredited option or 11-week accredited option.

If you are unable to pay a course fee in its entirety, but would be able to pay in instalments, you should contact the Centre to discuss how this can best be arranged - the Centre looks to support its students in all aspects of study, and aims to be flexible with regard to when payment is received.

Claimants

The Centre also offers a reduction in course fees for people receiving benefits: any such reduction is again at the discretion of the Head of Lifelong Learning. The following groups are eligible for a reduction:

  • Unemployed people in receipt of unemployment benefit
  • Those in receipt of any means-tested benefit
  • Unwaged dependants of registered unemployed/means tested benefit holders

For 10-credit modules and non-accredited evening and day classes, students eligible for this rate pay a fee of £25 (per term if relevant); for 20-credit modules, the fee is £50. For the online accredited modules the fee is £100 (20-credit module) or £50 (10-credit module). You must include a photocopy of appropriate documentation on application to confirm your entitlement for the current academic year.

Venue

Unless otherwise stated, classes for 2010/11 will be held at the University campus in Heslington. Please note that during the day there is a 10 minute change over time between classes, so please be patient when waiting for the previous occupants to vacate the room and be ready to leave promptly.

Parking

Please be aware that parking on campus during the day can be problematic, so please allow yourself extra time to find a parking space. Car parking charges are in force during the day, until 6pm. Alternatively, there are regular bus services to the campus. Please note for those classes located at the King’s Manor, there is no parking available and we would advise you to use local pay and display car parks.

Online Learning

For 2011/12, the Centre is offering a number of online distance learning courses hosted by the University’s Virtual Learning Environment, all of which appear in the relevant subject area of the brochure. All learning on these courses will take place via distance, making this an ideal way for those with busy schedules to engage in our provision. There is no requirement to be online at any specific point in time, making this a truly flexible learning experience.

Students must have access to a PC or Mac with a broadband-standard of internet connection, and should be familiar with web-browsing - if you have any queries about the technical requirements of these courses, please do call the Centre for advice.

Joining Instructions

The Centre will issue details of the room(s) when we have final confirmation of the location and know that the class itself is viable. Please note that although we try to give students as long a lead time as possible, students may not receive their acknowledgement slip until a week before the course is due to begin.

Cancellations and Refunds

If the Centre for Lifelong Learning has to cancel a course due to insufficient numbers, or for any other reason, then a full refund will be made. In the event of a course being cancelled after its start, then a proportional refund will be given. Refunds may take about six weeks to process via the University of York’s central finance office.

Following any enrolment in advance of a course, you, as the student, have a ten day ‘cooling off’ period: during this time, you can withdraw your application and receive a full refund. After this period, any refund is at the discretion of the Centre, an administrative fee may be applied and you will normally be reimbursed with vouchers that can be used for future Lifelong Learning courses.

Refunds cannot be given for missed weeks.

Complaints

On the non-accredited programme, should you have a problem with any aspect of the course provision, please contact the Director of the Centre if the issue can not be resolved with the course tutor.

If you are studying on the accredited programme you should contact your student representative to raise any complaint on your behalf.

Recommend a Friend

For 2011/12, the Centre for Lifelong Learning is offering an initiative, whereby past students can ‘recommend a friend’ and receive a discount on their next course fee of 25%. To take advantage of this offer, you can recommend a friend on the application form. The following terms and conditions apply:

  • The 25% discount is only available for a single booking, and only one ‘friend’ can be recommended per academic year.
  • Your ‘friend’ must book and attend a course with the Centre before you will be eligible for the discount.
  • Once nominated, your ‘friend’ must state on their application form that you have made the recommendation.
  • Both nominee and ‘friend’ must enrol on courses between 30 June 2010 and 30 June 2011 to be eligible for the discount – discounts can not be carried across from or to the next academic year.
  • There is no cash alternative to the 25% discount and discounts can not be awarded retrospectively.
  • The discount is for the recommending student only.
  • Should a ‘friend’ be nominated by more than one existing student, only the nominee whose application was first received by the Centre will be eligible for the discount.
  • A new student is defined as someone who has not undertaken a course with the Centre in the previous 5 years.
  • A past student is defined as someone who has undertaken a course with the Centre in the previous 5 years.

Course Vouchers

For 2011/12, the Centre is offering vouchers for its courses. These are available in a number of denominations and can be purchased directly from the Centre. They make an ideal gift, and can be used in part or full against the cost of a course.

Data Protection

The information supplied on the application form will be retained by the University on a database to be used for all legitimate purposes in connection with the administration of the adult education evening and day class programme.

Field trips and visits

Where field trips or other visits are involved, extra costs may be incurred. The Centre will inform those students on application should this apply. It is usually necessary for students to make their own travel arrangements. If your course does include a field trip, you have a legal responsibility to care for your own health and safety and that of others whilst on the visit.

Library access

Please note that if you are studying on the accredited programme you have full borrowing rights at the university library. Those engaged on the non-accredited programme can also request borrowing rights at the library once their course is confirmed as being viable – details on how to request this will be issued along with course joining instructions.

Half Terms and Bank Holidays

Courses will run as scheduled during half-term weeks and on Bank Holidays.

Notes

Whilst every effort is made to avoid changes to the programme, published details may be altered without notice, at any time. The Centre for Lifelong Learning reserves the right to withdraw or amend any part of this programme without prior notice.

The Director of Community Relations and Lifelong Learning reserves the right to exclude any student if, in her view, their presence makes it difficult for the class to function properly.
