Academic Excellence

The University of York has been named University of the Year in the 2010 Times Higher Education (THE) Awards. York was ranked 11 out of 117 in The Guardian’s 2010 university league table and 8 out of 159 for research excellence in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

Our Centre is linked to both the Politics Department and York Law School for purposes of research assessment and optional modules.

York’s Politics Department is one of the largest in the UK and it was ranked in the top 20 for research quality in the 2008 RAE. It has regional expertise in British politics and public policy, Latin America, southern Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. It also houses specialist centres in post-war reconstruction and development, toleration, environment and labour studies.

Founded in 2007, York Law School is vibrant and growing. The school emphasizes Problem Based Learning and its research strengths include international and comparative corporate and commercial law, international trade law, environmental law, criminal law, international labour law, comparative labour law, and EU law.

Supportive Environment

The small class size of the Centre’s MA and LLM programs enhances the learning environment and ensures that students work closely with academic staff.

Student life is based around a college system. All full-time graduate students are affiliated with a college, while 50% live in a college (most in Wentworth Graduate College). There is also a Graduate Students' Association.

Diversity

The Centre’s staff, visiting human rights defenders, and students come from all over the world and have a wide range of human rights experiences.

Location

The Centre is housed in a recently purpose-built facility on the new Heslington East campus along with York Law School and York Management School. The building contains lecture theatres, seminar rooms, Problem Based Learning space, and departmental offices.

The York campus is set in 200 acres of parkland, but is less than two miles from the city centre and easily accessible with frequent bus services.

York is one of the UK’s most livable cities and a top tourist destination for its well-preserved medieval walled city. In a recent ‘quality of life’ survey, York placed 7 out of 145 cities. It has frequent, high-speed rail links to London (2 hours), Manchester (1 hour) and Edinburgh (2 hours).
