Postgraduate study at the IEE

The IEE has places available for postgraduate students wishing to study for research degrees in education. We specialise in applied research, in particular randomised controlled trials (RCTs), systematic reviews, and research into translating knowledge into practice.

The IEE offers a unique PhD experience, focusing on school-based interventions and approaches to improve reading, mathematics, social and emotional learning, and parental engagement. Postgraduate research proposals should generally be in areas related to the interests of our staff and department.

Please explore this website for details about current and previous reseach and the specific interests of our supervisory staff. If you would like to have an informal discussion about a potential idea, please contact our Director of Postgraduate Studies Dr Tracey Bywater in the first instance.

Why choose the IEE?

The IEE has brought together world-class academics in the field of education and early years research, and is a major force in the drive for evidence-based education. We are housed in the Berrick Saul Building, a spectacular multi-disciplinary research centre at the University of York, and offer a friendly, supportive atmosphere.

York is one of the top research Universities in the world, and the Department of Education was rated in the top 10 education departments in the UK in the last RAE (Research Assessment Exercise).
