Professor Bette Chambers is Director of the Institute for Effective Education, and a Professor in the Center for Research and Reform in Education at Johns Hopkins University in the US. She is also the Chair of the Board of Directors for Success For All - UK (a restructuring programme which helps schools to identify and implement strategies designed to meet the needs of all learners), and directs the development and dissemination of early childhood education and technology-embedded programmes for the Success for All Foundation.
Professor Chambers received her BA in Early Childhood Education from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada in 1982, and her PhD in Educational Psychology in 1990 from McGill University. From 1987 to 1998, she taught and researched early childhood education at Concordia University. She has authored and co-authored numerous articles, books, and practical guides for teachers, including Let’s Cooperate: Interactive Activities for Young Children and Classroom Connections: Understanding and Using Cooperative Learning.
Professor Chambers’ current work focuses on developing and evaluating replicable programmes that use co-operative learning and technology-embedded instruction, particularly in early childhood education and early literacy. She is working on the pilot of a beginning reading programme called Reading Roots Interactive which uses embedded multimedia segments presented on the interactive whiteboard, a programme which will be evaluated in a large-scale randomised experiment next year. Other projects include an evaluation of Success for All, and a randomised experiment considering the use of ‘learner response devices’ for formative assessment in Year 7 and 8 mathematics.
Professor Chambers has been the recipient of the Bothwell-Smith award for outstanding contribution to the field of early childhood education and the Palmer O. Johnson award for the best article in an AERA journal in 2007.
