The PREMIUM trial: examining the effectiveness of lay counsellor-delivered psychological treatment for harmful drinking in primary care in India

PREMIUM has developed a set of methods for adapting evidence from high income countries to meet the needs for research in low and middle income country settings. For alcohol, this has involved reviewing the literature, undertaking qualitative studies in India to better appreciating explanatory culturally resonant models of alcohol problems, and developing treatment manuals for basic counselling and Counselling for Alcohol Problems (CAP). A large randomised controlled trial (RCT) is being completed which examines the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of delivery by lay counsellors in primary care in helping male harmful drinkers.
