A randomised trial of nicotine patch preloading for smoking cessation - the Preloading Trial

An open label pragmatic randomised controlled trial of nicotine patch preloading for smoking cessation. The trial takes place in NHS smoking cessation clinics providing participants with patches and monitoring them prior to their quit day. The York component will measure incremental cost-effectiveness of the additional patch use, support visit and telephone call, adopting the perspective of the NHS as payer. The benefits will be estimated as lifetime smoking abstinence compared to lifetime smoking, modelled from 6 month abstinence by applying long-term relapse rates. Lifetime abstinence can be turned into QALYs gained using data from cohort studies.
