A multidisciplinary study day promoting the safe transfer of patients requiring cardiovascular care.
This course will be of interest to: nursing staff, ambulance staff or other healthcare professional regularly involved in the transfer of patients with cardiovascular problems.
Every year there are over 11,000 inter-hospital transfers in the UK; this is often when critical incidents occur.
Those working within a cardiovascular setting will be aware of ongoing and the very current issues surrounding the transfer of this vulnerable and often unstable patient group. These include the increase in transfer for specialist interventions such as percutaneous angioplasty and the need to transfer patients requiring intra-aortic balloon pumping.
In light of this a team of senior clinical and academic staff have developed a study day to provide the knowledge and skills required for safe transfers. Based on the concept of ‘Training for Transport’( a nationally recognised course concerning the transfer of ventilated patients) ‘Training for Transport in Cardiovascular Care’ will involve new content utilising well established teaching methods.
The day will be taught by a variety of specialists and academics allied to cardiovascular and critical care including a consultant medic, specialist nurses and ambulance staff. We will use a combination of short lectures, skill stations and clinical scenarios in a well supported way to facilitate your learning. Candidates will work in small inter-professional groups to simulate team working in clinical practice.
The course encompasses all aspects of planning, organizing and completing the safe transfer of a patient with serious cardiovascular health needs. It uses a variety of short lectures followed by skills stations and clinical scenarios to reinforce knowledge and develop practical skills.
Candidates work in small multi-professional teams incorporating nurses, ambulance personnel, cardiac physiologists and other healthcare professionals, with a maximum of sixteen candidates per course.
The course emphasizes:
A series of sessions focusing upon cardiac pathophysiology, communication, crew recourse management and planning for safe patient transfer.
Small groups of candidates rotate through a series of skill stations including airway management, IABP transfer and external pacing.
The scenarios demonstrate all aspects of safe transfer discussed in the lectures and skills stations. They involve the ‘real transfer’ of patient simulators to a waiting ambulance and other clinical environments.
